...is it worth it? in many instances insurance companies will give you a reduction in your premium if you have one fitted, but the monthly cost of having the tracker installed + your reduced premium usually add up to more than your original insurance quote ( without a tracking device)....surely if you have a tracker fitted you should get massive reductions in your insurance???
why is this not the case, are we just being screwed....again?

Those fly by night insurance companies like Dial Direct/Outsurance/Budget, etc will usually pay the monthly subscription and reduce your rate.

I personally go through a broker now, and pay R110 with matix. My insurance is also much lower than with the above companies.

I personaly don't use any tracking system.

If my car is stolen I don't want it back, I want it replaced ;)

The reason you don't get massive reductions is because theft is only one part of the risk. You might crash the car and it needs to be replaced or repaired, or you might damage someone elses Aston Martin and your insurance will have to pay for it.

You said a mouthful. These fly by night insuarance companies are screwing us. Go to the broker and you get the best premiums and are well looked after.

I learnt the hard way and insured with one of them and got messed up.

When I was using Netstar, I lost my vehicle in Monte's parking lot ... yup, I know ... they could not even tell me where my vehicle was without launching their helicopter, so .. later on I called them and asked them what is required to happen before they'll launch the chopper, and they refused to tell me.
Plain flat refused.

I bet they only pursue and "recover" vehicles that are worth 400K or more and have negotiated some kind of kickback from the insurers.

Depends on the tracking system. If you had the *expensive* option they'd just look at the GPS signal. Mine activated all the time due to some glitch and I'd ask where I was and they'd track correctly without a chopper in sight. I think the chopper is used for visual recovery and to pick up signals from the lesser models.

it really depends on the insurance company.
Outsurance really gives a good deal.
SA eagle is handshaked with netstar

Thats what I used to say, until it happens. YOU WILL WANT YOUR CAR BACK!:(

It happened, got the car back.

Problem: They drove the car in second for close to 100 KM's. The insurance replaced the locks and and and. I was left with the bill to replace the engine that was completely fk'd.

No thanx, I don't want the car back next time ;)

Yup, nowadays they're getting a little more advanced, but, still ... the industry does not disclose facts like:
- numbers of vehicles not recovered.
- money spent on pursuing vehicles.

True. That's because the figures would be embarrassing.
Netstar recently lost a chopper and they don't have more than you can count on a hand, countrywide. Do the math.
As for ground recovery, I don't know much about high tech, but I saw a netstar clapped out contraption cruising around an upmarket neighbourhood with a guy hanging out the window, waving around one of those roof mounted SABC television antennae with his hands.:D
