A Langlaagte street vendor was arrested on Friday for attempted murder and malicious damage to property, Johannesburg police said.
Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the man, 29, was selling cold drinks at Commando and Main Reef Road and allegedly had a misunderstanding with a motorist.
"As a result he threw a burning object inside [the] vehicle and it caught fire," said Dlamini.
The burning vehicle, which still had the male driver inside, rolled down Commando street.
Other street vendors managed to stop the vehicle by blocking it with bricks and stones.
"The victim was helped out of the burning vehicle. He was immediately rushed to Milpark Hospital," said Dlamini.
The man was in shock and had sustained burn wounds.
Dlamini said the vehicle, a Renault Clio, was completely burnt out and beyond repair.
The alleged attacker was to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
