Venice votes to break away from rest of Italy, create ‘Repubblica Veneta’
Even though 89% of Venetians are for making the city a sovereign state after 150 years as a part of Italy, authorities claim it is not legally-binding.

interesting. :D

Members of the Cape Party looking on with envy....

All dozen or so of them.

If only the Western Cape could do the same to the rest of South Africa.

Why not though ?

Thats what I am wondering, the people of the Western Cape have the right to vote if they want to be independent, it has apparently been said that WC can support themselves financially if they were their own country. I also read somewhere and I can't remember where that 75% of WC tax money is spent outside of the WC province to support other provinces, but I think there is so much to take into account especially when it comes to the gold and what would their main source of income as a country be, is tourism, wine etc. enough to keep a country financially strong. I'm not all clued up with economics etc. it's just things that come to mind so correct me if I'm wrong.

Parliament is in Cape Town so that's never going to happen.
KZN could really benefit from succeeding it seems over the last 20 years that government has been doing whatever they can do get its resources and people to Gauteng

Marvellous. Hopefully this can blossom into a pan-European and eventually worldwide movement to dismantle the mega-states we have today. They are quite unnatural, and are the unnatural spawn of the 19th C turmoil that followed the French Revolution ... in many cases the large mega-states were created by the rise of Nationalism, one of the most destructive and decadent movements of the last 200 years.

We forget that the Renaissance was born and played out in the free self-governing duchies and mini-states of northern Italy, where free market economies reigned for centuries. We won't have another until the highly centralised nation-states are dismantled and liberty is returned to the people, unshackled from the crushing burden of the modern mega-state and its endless taxes and bureaucracy.

I'm 100% behind the restoration of an independent Venice. And Piedmont-Savoy. And Genoa. And thence to Rome and the whole of Europe and the world. Even here is SA. Let's split the country into cantons and little republics, and have people elect representative governments closer to their real local needs. It'll quickly sort out what works and what doesn't, because people will vote with their feet. Right now we're trapped in a large mega-prison. Why, after all, should people in Gauteng fund roads in the Western Cape, or vice versa? To answer "because we're one country" begs the question.

Arthur, when everyone are city states I will invade and conquer them all because none will have an army big and complex enough to stop me...

Oh, and will the whole of Northern Cape fall under the Kimberley city state? Will I have to follow very different laws when going from the City of Gauteng state to the Durban city state? Will I need a password?

That's exactly what the Imperialists and Nationalists did to create the mega-states. We need to undo their legacy of infamy.

In politics and sociology, divide and rule (or divide and conquer) (derived from Greek: διαίρει καὶ βασίλευε, diaírei kaì basíleue) is gaining and maintaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into pieces that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. The concept refers to a strategy that breaks up existing power structures and prevents smaller power groups from linking up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divide_and_rule

Its a tactic rich powerful individuals use to break up the power of the people so they can have more control.

The maxims divide et impera and divide ut regnes were utilised by the Roman ruler Caesar and the Corsican emperor Napoleon. The example of Gabinius exists, parting the Jewish nation into five conventions, reported by Flavius Josephus in Book I, 169-170 of The Wars of the Jews (De bello Judaico).[1] Strabo also reports in Geography, 8.7.3[2] that the Achaean League was gradually dissolved under the Roman possession of the whole of Macedonia, owing to them not dealing with the several states in the same way, but wishing to preserve some and to destroy others.

Its an interesting move to say the least...

One that will get the Cape Party bashing their pathetic drum all over again....

And how and where will you raise such an army? Your forget that modern tech changes the balance of forces very easily.

I dunno. Ask them.

Ever travelled from Nice to Monte Carlo?

This could get interesting. Putin may not have realized what he started.
A number of secessionist groups is probably going to see what happens with Crimea.
Venice, Catalonia, across the ocean in Quebec (Perfect timing - I read the party's support is waning again)

The idea of KZN seceding is a interesting one, but lets not forget Zuma is a Zulu.

Yeah.. KZN seceding would have a MUCH bigger impact on SA as a whole than the WC..... but neither will happen.... neither province can survive on their own really, regardless of what anyone else says.

People make the mistake of thinking that succession means you try to become a viable self-sustaining all-sufficient entity just a like a mega-state.

That is not how it works in reality.

Interdependence. Free association. Openness and freedom. These are essential ingredients. And they are standard for all mini-states. Having a much smaller geographic expanse also means a much lighter hegemony - people quickly realise they can only survive by open and free association with others, by being modern and open and free. This instantly lightens the heavy hand of the Caesar and people breathe again the sweet air of liberty.

But if course modern people are so 'educated' by the Mega-State and its apologists that they cannot conceive of a different world. They want more of the same we have today, just larger and more powerful governments. This is the very opposite of what is really required.
