Hi can anybody help please, my external drive is not showing on any of my pc's. I've tried disc manager and some 3rd party programs. The only place it shows is in device manager as a "usb device". I'm not sure what to do its still under warranty thus I don't want to open the enclosure to check.

I know hard drives above a certain size need a different MBR setting...I seem to recall GPT for some reason?

What Windows version are you running? (assuming you are using M$)

Windows 8 and 7. It was working all the time just started acting up today.

It shows as a USB device because it's picking up the USB controller.

Warranty or recovery, depends if your data is important.

Ouch lots of media on but I will rather take it back for a new one then risk voiding the warranty

PostmanPot is correct.

I thought maybe it was a new drive that couldn't be initialized when you first started using it. If you value the data, you could have Southbit recover it but then you would lose the data. Tough choice, it's never easy losing data :(

I'm fighting the depression of losing most of my media content, putting on a brave face. I'll return the drive today and start fresh. This just had to happen after receiving my Mweb abuse letter :(

How does Southbit recover data (that you value), but then you lose it anyway? Why use it and for that matter the word "recover" too.

I wonder if I open the housing and plug the hard drive direct onto a sata port if it would work

2 verbatim externals dies on me in under a year.

No thanks

I'm going to Game tonight will ask them if they will allow me to open and attempt a recovery first, if it's just the actual casing I'll be happy to scrap the warranty and use the drive as a internal.

I had a verbatim 2tb that worked perfectly and then stopped working.
Picked up as a us device in windows.
It was out of warranty though so I didn't mind opening it.
3 years later and the drive is still running fine in my machine.

It was a Samsung drive.
I've also got Seagate drives in Verbatim cases.

Does anyone have the schematics on how to take the housing out. My sector is kind of jammed cos it fell.. I hear a buzzing sound which means it probably shifted not sure how to open the housing for the external hard drive. Model 047672-93
