Please don't buy this tv box no matter how cheap it is. It's vulnerable to exploits and adds it to a botnet. 100Mbps line maxed at 100Mbps upload sending udp ddos packets at such a forced high rate that pppoe starts dropping.

Is it baked into the firmware or is the firmware really old along with no updates?

You never know what you getting.
I bought one off Takelot a few years ago based off the ratings. Wasn't the cheapest or most expensive but it works good.

there are a few known reliable brands - just stick to those and you will be fine

Nvidia, Asus, Xiaomi, Mecool, Google Streamer, ONN and also the decent enough and well liked (though IMHO overpriced) Apple TV even though it isn't Android based and isn't really up to doing very well playing locally stored stuff on hard drives because you cant connect external drives to it directly (not sure if those can connect via a network) but yep check if the device is Google certified - if it isn't then avoid it ) - of the list i gave the Apple TV will not be Google certified since it uses Apple software but it will do the online streaming stuff well enough
