Vetting Solar Installers

Just received a quote from an installer. Based of a referral of a referral of a referral

Equates to around 80k upfront payment.

  • Not VAT registered
  • Not CIPC registered
  • Personal Bank Account
  • Have a copy of installers ID
  • Business address is located at a caravan park near Strand
  • No T&C's
  • Says he is PAYE and SARS registered (not sure how that is possible without CIPC)
  • Website details redacted

  • Business been around for a couple years doing solar pools and geysers
  • Facebook page a couple years old - 2007 (3 reviews)
  • Cellphone number seems legit and around online
  • Guy has been super proactive in terms of site inspection and communication
  • Can install next week
  • Showed me the Sunsync app on his phone and he has about 10 installs he monitors
  • Arrived in a car with registration linked to business location
How do you vet these guys? Hold them accountable and make sure they dont take 80k and disappear off the face of the earth?

Give the amount of demand at the moment and current load shedding I don't think we have a huge abundance of choice?
 
make sure he registered with manpower is also a registered electrician and is a registered contractor otherwise it will just be another illegal install with an invalid coc .youre choice .its illegal to install solar in SA unless the prrson is registered .you may just become the proof case when something happens .pay upfront not a f.ck and yes im a registered contractor with liscence as well as an installation electrician and yes i do coc but not for other people because most are illegal installs .be wary .also ask him for a copy of his yellow card with his photo .registration number and id in it .if he doesnt have it .......oh well .

When you're parting with that amount of money, there's no room to feel bad for anyone. I would just go with one of the suppliers/installers recommended here...

why must you pay him upfront .sy moer man .you pay him for the items when he packs it into your garage and you can lick the boxes and not before and you want sealed boxes

Tagged OP in his other thread recommending he look at the guy I used. It's shark infested waters out there otherwise!

Just shows you need money to make money.

I will also not pay upfront.
 
Sunsynk approved installer ? If not could have trouble claiming warranty in future.
 
Got an email to day from a shelf company offering "R9000 solar-installer registration special" - Only R9000 to register as a solar installer.

Expect them to be crawling out the cracks en-masse

means nothing .but they will catch plenty of folk .the solar world is the sole domain of electrical contractors nobody else .but folk dont know that untill they been caught .
