I havent owned a vidcam for about 10 years so I am completely out of touch with the tech.

I want to get one to film my twin boys upcoming entry into this world and also their first years growing up. Any pointers on what and how to choose would be greatly appreciated.

(Hope this is the best section for this....)

I would get a HD camera with Hard Drive storage.

Stick to the better brands like Sony, Panasonic and Canon.

Ignore crap like digital zoom and look at optical zoom. Other thing to look at is indoor & night performance.

As ponder mentioned, HD cams are great.

I have a Sony handycam and it has been an absolute pleasure to use.

Makro currently have one for about R3999 and that is the 60GB version which is PLENTY of space to record. Quality is also superb.

Sorry to hi-jack, but wanted to ask about HDD cams versus memory card cams. How safe are the hard drives in these cams in terms of movement and bumping etc? Isn't there less chance of things breaking with a memory card cam?
My other question was whether there's any point in getting an HD cam when you haven't got an HD TV?

Thanks for your help.

Thats what Im trying to find out. I would think that HD is now so widespread (at least on TV sets even if not broadcast yet) that it would be worth getting one if you were spending money now.

Also I think those HD Sonys also have a mem stick?

Erm....as soon as I get around to installing the SW to get it onto the PC Ill let you know. But it looks great on the vidcam's LCD ?

Purchased an entry level HD Camera: Sony HDR-UX20E from B&H Photo in New York for $449
External Microphone: Sony ECM-HST1
It all depends on what you want to take videos of ,for me its to take amateur videos of family , steam trains
Thats why the external microphone works well even in windy conditions

1920×1080i Full HD video recording with 8 Gb Internal memory

Negative points on the camcorder:
1) Fast Pan/Zoom - takes alot of getting used too, use the Pan/Zoom buttons on the screen as opposed to the other location, its more controlled
2) Limited battery life of 1 hr

Canon HV40 or Panasonic HS300/SD300. For automated everything cameras Sony is usually better than most (at doing everything for you), but their picture quality isn't the greatest.

ive fallen/crashed a bunch of times(over the last 3 or so years) whilst filming with a Sony HDD camera and it still works a-ok!

Everyone in bmx knows of the hankey.
Bought a Primo Hollowbite from you a few years back.
