I use a Hikvision 16 port card at work to record our cameras. The card comes with the software from Hikvision. The software is really good, free download from their site, but I am not sure if it will work on other brands but Hikvision. I record about 12 cameras to a 1 TB drive. I have it tweaked to keep about 4 months of video, obviously to only record on movement etc...

The big problem with doing a DVR system is it that it is usually a good idea to run it on a dedicated p.c. And you can buy smaller DVR systems for less than you can build it. (if you buy a new p.c.)

So it is a good idea to do some research and try not to do less than 15 FPS per port. (A card that is rated at 50 FPS, 100 FPS etc will be for the entire card, and not per port).
