Hi all,

I need the legendary wisdom of mybroadband forum users.
I am thinking of a simple, cost effective solution for 2 things we need done.
We need to video conference with our JHB branch and on the same system we want to remote desktop into one of windows pc via LAN to show 3D models of our products.

My idea is to get a Cloudgate andriod unit, plug in a good webcam and good microphone, all on a 32" screen and video conference via google hangout or similar. (our small conference room is only for 7 persons, so all are within 3m range)
Then install a RDP app and one of there multimedia Bluetooth keyboards with buildin track-pad as mouse.

My concern to the ability for the Cloudgate unit to process these 2 things effectively, (not at the same time).
Thank in advance for your comments.
Dennis

32" ?

Struggle with that size when it comes to detailed objects on a 60" tv we have in the design office with people around 1.5 meters away...

I tried something similar with a Minix 5 Android device, but the web cam was not well recognised (it worked in some apps, but not others), which was odd. IIRC, Hangouts was one that did not work, but Skype did, or the other way around.

Thx AstroTurf, We did a test on the actual screen hooked to said PC, for our details requirements is did quite OK, was actually impressed as I expected worse.

Hi Delta,

For this requirement I would suggest using the Windows CloudGate as opposed to the Android version as the peripheral support is better.

If you would like to discuss further please DM me.

Thx RoganDawes, I'll google to find best camera for choosen VC software.

It's not so much about the best camera, I think, it's about the underlying software (Operating System) being properly built to facilitate use of the camera. You may find that the CloudGate builds have paid attention to the camera, and made sure it works since it is designed as a desktop replacement, whereas the Minix is designed as a media box.

Seems like there is an audience for this, who would also appreciate hearing about the solution. Rather keep it in the forum so all can benefit.

Ash, thank you for the reply. As Rogan stated, will it be possible for you to elaborate, without breaking forum commercial rules?
There is a R1,000 difference in the price, I guess that the price for window OS.

I guess the "peripheral support" refers to drivers for Webcams. I would expect that UVC compliant webcams should be supported on all platforms, including the Android one. If not, it may be cheaper to choose a supported webcam, and the Android-based cloudgate, vs hoping to use some random webcam that you already have, and paying an extra K for the host.
