Is there free software available that will allow me to convert avi files to a dvd format and have the ability to create very simple menus.

Can you help please?

Video Conversation Software

Try VSO DivXtoDVD, for conversion, not sure if you can do menu's. I use the paid upgrade, which does allow it.
