Hi,

I have the D Series 51" HD ready Plasma and want to convert my DVD collection to play them of my external hard drive.

Which format should I use e.g. AVI, MP4 etc?
&
What other settings like resolution and audio bit rates should I choose?

You will lose quality. Rather just rip them without converting.

I recommend ripping to MKV using Handbrake. You can just set the quality setting high - you won't notice much of a difference between a good rip and direct copy but you will save yourself a lot of hard drive space. Ripping and encoding can be time consuming though if you don't have a beefy enough processor.

Ok thanks guys.I may end up using about 4 laptops to rip if it is time consuming maybe over the weekend.

I used to keep all my DVDs as raw VOBs... but now with Handbrake, you can compress a typical DVD movie to MKV (H.264) with a size of about 2GB (including original audio).

For some reason handbrake did not scan Aliens successfully. I used Aiseesoft. Mkv settings: mp4, aac5.1 and the rest at max. Will check size now. Should I use H.264?

Ok, size is 4.46GB. Also divx could not play the file.

Yes. Use H.264
