Video Conversion software

I downloaded a whole bunch of "legal" HD videos but they all came encoded in .mkv which is a problem since I use my PS3 as a media player and it can't read .mkv files. They actually dont show up in the files even and since I know have 22 gigs of .mkv waiting to be watched but nowhere but my 13" screen to watch from i'm getting a bit annoyed. Are there any free pieces of software that can convert .mkv to say .avi or something?

try AllToAVI but WinAVI is probably the better (not free) option.

You don't say??! Well, if you can go .mp4 HandBrake is one of the Mac apps du jour. Also, VLC will transcode for you too ..else you can rummage around mac.softpedia progs.

I already had VLC. No codec it can't play. How do I set it to transcode? does it work well?

Ah I found one for Mac and Windows. Any Video Convertor is its name. Just downloaded it and put in a batch of files. will report back on the quality when they done.

Found quickmediaconverter on tucows.com and it works for me.
