My video card displays "an arcade like boot up screen" when computer boot up until the login screen. At times the times (sometimes) there is a "clean" boot and most of of the time is shows moving pixels (lines, characters) which looks more like an arcade machine during boot up. I believe that this result from my video card NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT.

Does this mean I have to throw away my card? The display is perfect though in both Windows and Linux GUI's.

Could you give a better description or a picture or something?

Does it look something like either of these?

See above first, then:

Have you tried playing any games? Does the screen do the same? Does your startup take slightly longer than usual?

Eish, hope it's not a failure like what I experienced recently

My screen looks like the first photo. I have tried Battlefield once or twice while I started to experience the problem and it played well, no screen problem.

There's a dell system upstairs that also has a prob where the graphics are corrupted during the windows logo animation, but it is perfectly fine prior to and after that....

in your screen shots the logo itself is still visible, with artifacts in the background.... In my case there is complete corruption of the logo.

my guess was that the gpu outputs some weird combination of resolution+refresh rate that the monitor (19" phillips lcd) can't handle at that particular time.... cannot prove the theory as I haven't tested it with any other monitor.
just for interest's sake.... this system is less than 6 months old... an identical system in the adjacent office does not have the problem.... so it might be a faulty gpu after all...

The type of problem in the top picture can be caused by graphics card RAM going bad. So it could mean that your card is on the way out.

It could also be caused by cracked solder and some people will tell you to bake the card in an oven to reflow it (yes, seriously), but I have no experience in that.

How old is the card?

My card is about 2 years old or so. I am using a 19" Packard Bell screen. But problem continues on my other screen as well.

Off the wall, but has your monitor got an "auto adjust" feature or button? Some have the option of moving the screen left or right on the LCD panel, and if it's too far either way, corruption can occur with the displayed image.
Try pressing the auto adjust when the system first starts up (when the first text appears at the POST screen), and see if this helps at all. Then try adjusting again when booted into Windows desktop - I had this similar issue on my older BenQ 19" LCD's and the auto adjust fixed the problem.
You can also try setting the monitor to its default settings (factory settings) if you can.

Note: if the POST screen is too quick, press the Pause key during the POST and then auto adjust the LCD...
