Hi i am often in a situation over a weekend where I rent a few movies but as the weekend gets out of hand I end up not viewing them at all, and most often delay a day or two, and Monday return them... as you would guess 2 days late. Pay a premium, but never got to see any.

I have sometimes copied the contents to my hardrive and managed to watch late at night during week, but, a video copied earlier which I tried to view just shows giberish. The sound is perfect. Other times the video is all fine. What am I doing wrong.

I am no expert at this. I normally whatch documentaries. But as of late have found a nice collection on youtube but not some of the latest stuff. I know I can buy or get unlimmited supplies of copied stuff but this is not my scene. I just want to, if the occasion arrises, be able to whatch the movie later after I had to return it.

PS I do not own a PVR.

Do a Google search for "Magic DVD Ripper 5.5.2" - it should solve your problems.

How to back up Your DVDs and rip your DVD collection to your Hard Drive!

1) Remove Region Protection...
Install this program first... it will remove the copy protection and macrovision while you decrypt... (and will also allow you to watch region protected discs in the future)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD43

2) To make a backup of a DVD to another DVD...
DVD Decrypter can rip the DVD to your hard drive or make an ISO image...
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/
(Note: DVD Decrypter removes the CSS encryption on the DVD)
If DVDDecrypter has problems with a newer DVD install DVD43 (above).
If you have ripped the DVD files to your hard drive, you can then use DVD shrink to make the image smaller and turn it into an ISO file that I can fit onto one DVD... Note: you have to select ISO image as the target file from the drop down menu.

Once you have the ISO image you can use this program to burn it back to a DVD...

3) To Rip a DVD to an AVI or DivX (XviD) file...
The free version of this program Fair Use Wizard can rip any DVD to a 700 Mb AVI (XVid) File... with just one click...
http://www.fairusewizard.com/
but.... I find I get a much better quality rip, when I follow these steps...
i) Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your Hard Drive.
ii) Use DVD Shrink to make an ISO image of the DVD, but turn the compression off completely, in other words, the ISO image will be an exact image of the DVD. Also enable the two extra read options in DVD Shrink to get a better quality image, it is slower, but it pays off. Put that image on a different drive to the one you are going to rip to.
iii) Now use Fair Use Wizard to rip from that unencrypted image in your hard disk. You will get a very high quality rip with no artifacts and no "streaking".
Compare that to a rip straight from the DVD and you will see what I mean. Of course the quality of your DVD drive and speed of your processor is also a factor. 3.0 Ghz strongly recommended!

Define piracy.

I'm pretty sure renting a movie then copying it on your Pc isn't very legal, although after looking at the Terms and Conditions on both Blockbusters and Mr.Video there seems to be no mention that you can not do so... :wtf:

He has paid to rent the movie, that's all he is doing.

Yes he has paid to rent it, not to rent then copy it ;)

I see no problem with this, as many others just TAKE it without a cent going to the creators (and instead it goes to ISPs, or those dodgy street vendors)

at least he PAID for his rental, which keeps blockbuster happy and also the creators of the media getting their share....
Blockbusters is happy, Hollywood is happy, and Redsbaron is happy because he gets to see what he actually paid for.

sure, it might not technically be legal....just like recording tracks from the radio... yet everybody did it before the internet was invented.

Add: and as long as he does not distribute or share it with others.

Why don't you just rent 1 or 2 movies at a time - especially if you know something might come up - and not a whole bunch?

I have no problem with him making a copy to watch later, as long as he deletes it after watching. No piracy involved.

That's going to happen...

That's going to happen...

Even if it doesn't ... he's probably only gonna watch the movie once or twice more after that, and will probably lose the file on the next OS install.
He was never planning on buying the DVD anyway, so... no loss for the retailers.
He paid to Rent it, he watched it, maybe he watched it more than once... but there is no law against watching a rented movie more than once.
