This forum seems like the right place to post this. nope, no search was done, so you can crucify me if it is a double post :) (these kind of software pops up every day)

I have hours and hours of familly video, and would like to start doing something with it.

Back in the day i used nero's software to edit videos, but i am sure there are a couple of alternatives that gives better results.

  1. I don not have hours and hours of spare time, so ease of use is important
  2. Every now and then i will spend an afternoon just editing the vids, here i would like BEAST functionality :)

Any suggestions?

and..... what does the "PRO's" use?

I use Sony Vega's.
Used to use Adobe premier, but kept crashing.

Mac or PC?

I'm an Adobe Premier user on PC and it's been solid... just make sure you have enough memory and something like an i5 upwards CPU.

Windows Movie Maker? It's free and even then you hardly get what you pay for, but it's incredibly easy to use and if you don't need to do colour correction/grading, masking, blending etc it should get the job done. It's definitely at the top of the list for ease of use.

Sony Vegas Pro, to be honest lots of crashes.
I used to use the Sony Movie Studio Platinum before I upgraded to Pro, and it was very stable.

I have Adobe Premier and Sony Vegas 13 Pro. Also dabbled with most of the free stuff. So here goes:
First all the above can be located FREE if you look in the right places as they are both expensive.

If you are just planning to hobble a few videos together for fun and have no interest adding music or extra sound then Freemake Video Converter can be used, plus when you done you can resize the videos to make it easy to upload to Youtube etc.
Even if you use a more expensive editing tool, Freemake is best at making it smaller and more usable.
Okay punt for Freemake over.

Premier with after effects is a killer combination for the would be movie maker but I find Vegas is very easy to use all round. That said Final Cut Pro on a Mac is what all the pro's use.

I switch between the Premier and Vegas a lot, but if I had to say "easier" then I would say Vegas.

Cyberpower Director (not sure what the latest version is) is a rather interesting one (can be gotten for FREE as well if you know where to look) as it is really easy to use and has enough bells and whistles to make a half decent job.

You may not get everything Sony and Premier have to offer but it is way cheaper if you are actually spending money.
Hope this helps.

For simple cut editing avidemux is a good option.
