Hi there helpful folks! I'm in a bit of a pickle.... I'm editing a video profile for myself and would love to include a text block where I can put details in like: fun facts, personal details, etc....problem is that I have no idea what that's called so I can't Google it and the only information I can find is how to insert subtitles. Does anyone know what I'm on about? Please help! Thanks for reading (^^)

If it's on youtube they've got their own annotation tools you can use once uploaded.

With a video editor you'd add text / image into the video itself before rendering out. Most video editors allow placing of text wherever you want. This way makes the text part of the video and it can't be clicked or anything like with youtube.

It depends on what you're using to edit. Most apps have got quite good text generators built in now, eg Premiere, FCP, iMovie etc.

The simplest way is to format your text in another app (eg powerpoint), save it as a PNG file with a transparent background and import that and lay it over your footage. You can fade in and out if you want to.

But yeah, lower thirds is the usual, or search for text generator for your app, or you could try animated text for your app.

If you are using Adobe Premier Pro or Sony Vegas you literally design the text box in Photoshop save as png with no background and simply insert the image into a new track (above) your video track and it will automatically overlay the image onto your video. You can select where you want the image to appear and for how long. Very easy. If you are using youtube or some other app I have no idea :P

I'm [finally] graduating from iMovie to Davinci Resolve - can anyone recommend any good tutorials?

Any particular area you're gonna spend a lot of time in? For the timeline stuff you're probably fine already, though the shortcuts certainly help. Clips page you can ignore entirely. I'd pick either fusion (nodes etc.) or the color page (color grading, matting etc).

This guy can get a bit much sometimes but it's good getting started content:

This guy as well, lot of content but I can't watch him for long:

This channel for colour grading

This dude some decent audio (Fairlight) tutorials.

But once you've picked an area there's channels with a more specific focus or strongpoint. I'd also do some tutorials on tracking in fusion - a basic thing you'll probably use a lot for tracked text, titles, masking etc.

Thanks for the links.

I've been concentrating on multi-cam editing but I can tell the colour page is going to give me the most trouble. Not even sure what the fusion page is about yet! :o

This is a cool clip that shows very quickly how the color page can be used to improve shots.

This one longer but gives a decent idea of what's possible without a load of work.

The fusion page is where you can do things like tracking, particle effects and build your own effects using nodes. Like if you wanted something basic like a line to move up and reveal text for an intro, you could do it in the timeline, but the fusion page gives you a lot more options to build it yourself, adjust the motion curves in more detail, layer it with other things. I used it a while back to frame-by-frame animate something - used the pen tool in fusion to create a shape then adjusted the pen shape points frame by frame to create the impression of liquid flowing.

Nice!

I find Casey Faris a bit much. I prefer Mr Alex Tech as his presentation is a bit more tight - I generally started with his tutorials to get started in Resolve. He also has a nice tutorial on Multicam editing which helped me a great deal

Those look great. I've added them to my playlist.

Watched that one this morning. It really helped clean up a mess I'd made yesterday :)

Found a video on colour grading DSLR video

I see DaVinci Resolve 18 is out of beta.

Started a new project just yesterday using it and so far so good. In fact I’ve used beta 3 on a previous project without show stopping issues, except for some Fusion hiccups.
