I am now trying out ffmpegx. I see it has an option to use mencoder or ffmpeg to encode divx files - anyone here that can tell me which one they found is better?

Ffmpeg codec does however not encode the video_ts folder and you have to load the vob files one at a time and stitch it together afterwards.
Mencoder does the video_ts directory.

Handbrake is no good for me - even using the PS3 preset which encodes with h.264. the PS3 plays the audio fine but no picture.
Using handbrake's divx profile, some files work but some are not recognised.

I looked at their forum and was surprised to see how badly the developers answer questions of handbrake users - usually it ends with them attacking the user and the fact that HB .092's divx profile causes HB to crash on Intel Mac's is blamed on Apple and Leopard..

I have tried virtualDUB and it seems to work fine - it also does the vob files individually but stitches them together in one run - it is a bit on the slow side (about 1 hour for an average movie)

Just finished the ffmpegx test - the PS3 does not recognise the divx movie :(

I know there are complaints re divx compatibility on the PS3 all over the web so I am hoping that the firmware update scheduled for next week (14 th) will sort out some of the incompatibility issues.

EDIT:
just want to add that playing ripped DVD's works fine on the PS3 even streaming from the iMac with MediaLink media server - full AC-3 sound and DVD quality video.

I'm pretty sure I use the mencoder and at one time I heard a convincing argument as to why I should but for the life of me I cant recall what it was. :o

Visualhub, I see that Toast 9 has the option to encode files for PS3. I tried to encode for the psp and that didn't turn out so hot, but I think it's a problem with sony cnstantly changing the psp firmware rather than with toast.
