Hi there,

I'm looking for a Video recorder to replace my VCR. The iSONIC 800DVR seem like it would be perfect and well priced at about R1000, except that from what I can find on the internet it has a digital tuner and not an analog tuner and that will be useless to me. I don't need the expensive hard drive recorders, just something simple.

My main requirement for the device I'm looking for would be that it can record timer based TV broadcasts to a USB stick preferably in a format that I can view on my PC if I choose to do so.

I've looked at the LG DR389, it has USB, however from what I can figure out, it can only play from USB and not record to USB, it only record to disc.

Any suggestions as to what I should look for and where to buy, PLEASE.

good luck

Closest I could find was record audio to USB.

most of the dvd recorders dont allow stuff to be transferd via usb for copy protection reasons. even if you copy from a usb to the HDD you cant copy it back
best bet is to get a pc with a tuner card and time recording softwareto do this.

Oh, well, I suppose I'll have to look into the HDD machines. I just didn't want to spend that much on a recorder. What would you recommend?

My concern with using discs is I find with my current DVD player and especially with my LG DVD writer in my PC that a disc doesn't always work the first time it is inserted, then I must eject and close the tray again, to get it to work. So I'm worried that with the DVD recorder that I'd insert a disc and when it has to start recording the disc doesn't want to work and then I'm not around to open and close the tray.

The one in your OP do have a AV IN port which is better then a tuner anyway.

Also,i'm fairly certain that it is an anologue tuner.Different specs and manufacturers for these products worldwide even though they use the same modelno's.
If it was a digital tuner,it would've support the MPEG2 TS format.Usually dvb-t tuners in hdd players are for play only. Some do dvb-t record but that's a big feauture and one would have highlighted it.

I'm sure where you read about the digital tuner,it was a seperate device anyway.

Ellies have one, look like a portable hard disk. apparently, it can do a lot of features. Don't know the price. you can download the manual from ellies.
