John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, says that strong demand for online video could lead internet network traffic to grow by as much as 500 per cent per year over the next several years (reports the Financial Times). “Because of its high bandwidth requirements, video is widely viewed as the “killer application” of integrated data, voice and video services.”

Fortunately for many Europeans and Asians, competition in broadband services is driving down price and pushing up bandwidth.
 
/me just looks at SA situation, shakes head and grins...
 
Video on demand will remain a pipe dream in SA until we get real broadband.
 
Haven't there been triple-play trials in SA? Of course if the service did become available it would only cost, oh, about R10000 per month....

Not necessarily. It will be in line with DSTV prices but monopolised. It will happen though Telkom in collaboration with MS, MultiChoice and perhaps another player all with Telkom as bandwidth provider. The bandwidth will be flatrated and included in the package.

No other players will be able to afford the bandwidth needed for this...

That would make sense. Do you know how close we are to this being generally available?
