I've got some spare time coming up and I thought Vietnam seems cool to visit.

I'll be staying in Hanoi (Hoam Kiem area) for around 10 days but I am free to travel during that time.

Any advice from you seasoned travelers to this country would be appreciated. Where to go, what to visit, how to get there, prices, what food I should really try. I'm open to any and all advice.

Beautiful place to visit - just make sure you do the whole country if possible, north and south.

Had the most amazing time there last December, super friendly people and very affordable.

Went there for 16 days 3 years ago. Absolutely incredible place, you won't be disappointed.

Days 1-3: Airbnb in Hanoi. You can Uber everywhere (use it from the airport as well), Street food is amazing (Pho, Bun Cha etc), had it every day. You can see which ones you can 'trust'. Visited all the main sites/attractions. Mostly walked (when you cross a road, do not hesitate, just GO and you will be fine). Book a street food tour on your first day (gives you a great feel of the city). Take a private cooking class (they take you to local markets and you then prepare some of their most iconic dishes). Enjoy the coffee and the shopping!

Days 4-5: Booking.com on Cat Ba Island (southern part of Ha Long Bay). Book your transfer before you arrive (bus to Haiphong Port, hydrofoil to Cat Ba). From friends/reviews, it is much better going this way than staying on one of the Junk Boats in the Bay for a few days. On Cat Ba, go for a hike with a guide on one of the larger island. Go kayaking in the bay between all the islands (breathtaking literally). Also do rock climbing which it is quite famous for.

Days 6-14 Head back to Hanoi. Catch a flight to Dong Hoi (lowest cost airlines available, same price as ours). Get a transfer to Phong Nha. I stayed at a Airbnb. Easy Tiger is the alternative. It is a massive hostel with an amazing setup. I spent most days there but then could retreat back to my own place. Rent a scooter for the whole time you there (super cheap) and just explore. Visit some of the worlds largest caves ('Paradise Cave' is fantastic). Do jungle treks and swim in rivers inside massive caves ('Dark Cave'). Hop on your scooter and ride around Phong Nha National Park (one day I rode to the border with Laos). Visit the 'Pub with Cold Beer' where you, if you like chicken, grab a cleaver and have the honors... :D

Day 15-16: Back in Hanoi. Flew out with Cathay. Alternative is Singapore Airlines, otherwise look at the ME carriers.

I know many people want to do the whole of Vietnam in one trip, either from Saigon to Hanoi, or vice versa. I don't suggest this as you will just end up rushing through everything. Yes you can rent bikes for next to nothing. In the rural areas I felt confident (former Enduro rider), however in the cities it is chaos.

If you in Hanoi and want to enjoy the surrounds, consider Sapa (mountains, very rural, go via train) and Cat Ba (island life).

If you willing to venture south, Phong Nha is great for jungle adventures. You can also visit Da Nang for a beach holiday. Hoi An and Hue for a cultural experience.

Many people travel via train internally. If you strapped for time, i suggest just flying. The airlines are good and they are cheap.

Any questions, let me know. I can share some pictures in the next few days.

We also used Hanoi as a base for our visit. 3 days, travel, 2 days, travel, 2 days. My advice is, don't.
3 days is more than enough in the city.
Don't trust ****ing taxi drivers and their dodgy ****ing meters. Only use Grab (like uber)
We did the Sapaly train trip to sapa, with a hike in the rice paddies. If you do, get the VIP package to get your (you and your partner) own cabin on the train.

To be honest, I think we would have had an even better time if we rather did a South to North tour than trying to stay in Hanoi and use that as a base.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be on my own as it's just a short break from work for a few days. I'd like to do a bit of mountain biking as that is my thing.

I'll definitely look into the caves and the train trip. I don't want to do too much because I might bring the family over sometime next year for a holiday.

@roskii Please do share some pictures

Didn't go to Hanoi, been to Ho Chi Minh

On the main streets, the food is fine - once you head into the back districts - the things in the windows that look like peking duck have paws :( :(

Planning our trip there for April to watch the Vietnam GP.

Will be me and SO, two parents and our two young kids.

There for 11 nights in total and want to see a little bit of everything but also want to get a bit of the beach life.

I looked at a few pictures of beach resorts in Ho Chi Minh (old Saigon) and dont see many people in the waters? Is it swim friendly?

Did anyone do Halong Bay? Need to get there from Hanoi - any advice on how to get there?

Pictures if you have and any tips you can share would be great.

+1 on going to Catba.

Went to 'nam in 2016 and Cat Ba was one of the best experiences of the trip.

We are also going to the GP in Hanoi.

There are many cruises in Halong Bay, I'm sure your hotel can organise for you. Depending on your budget, this one has very good reviews: https://www.paradisecruise.com/

If you want to go to nice beaches, then you need to go to Da Nang, I would also recommend some time in Hoi Ain - it is the cultural capital of Vietnam.

Been following this thread and been on my bucket list for years.Grand Tour Special this Dec made decide so this will be the year I go, If all goes well it will be in Aug.

I'm currently in Saigon on holiday. Have been up to Ha Long and Cat Ba last week and this week we are just hanging around. Cat Ba was nice definitely worth the money. The one night boat cruise in Ha Long was ok, won't do it again if given the opportunity, it is a tourist trap. The day trip boat cruise from Cat Ba around the islands is much nicer. Saigon is ok. Humidity and heat is terrible and this being their winter is suppose to be much better than summertime. The weather up in Cat Ba was completely different than here.
