Yeah, but just listening and not actually questioning etc. isn't exactly a good thing either.
As much as I don't want to get screwed over, I also don't want to give up a good deal by being too damn paranoid.

You know I was busy replying to RaptorSA's question when I was logged OFF ! But anyway, I see you've done the wise thing. Good choice. In my case I was given full service history, COR and the works. Had to eventually buy it back from SA Eagles, since they where the rightful owners - to cut a long story short.

That's the problem. They're so damn intoxicating when you test drive them that the little thing keeps begging you to suspend logic and just BUY IT!
I haven't given up though. Too bad the newer NC models are out of my price range for the most part, but I'd just be as happy to replace it with the 2001-2005 NB model I had until recently.
 
remember when something is almost to good to be true, for instance like R20k under the usual price, there is generally a reason.

I want to contact Mazda first thing tomorrow and see if I can find more details.
If there's no record of an accident I'd like to believe that the car is fine and that I accept normal maintenance issues that come with a vehicle that has relatively high KM's but has been taken care of. I don't want to take on any more risk than that, so knowing how reliable VIN number checking works is a big part of my decision.

124k is nothing on an engine :D

VIN number checks will work if the parts are bought directly from the Mazda/Ford dealers when doing repairs at a panel beater. If they were obtained second hand you will never know. If you like the car and body work is 100% then buy it. Engines can be bought and replaced, make sure the body work is all in good order and you're golden. Anyway, congrats on your new MX5 :p

Hi Folks

I would like to check the VIN and Engine numbers before I buy a motorbike. Do I simply go to the police station and have it checked to see if it is stolen? If so, do you know how long that might take?
