I am considering a second-hand vehicle and wanted to do a VIN check. There are various decoders available online and some of them accepts the VIN and gives some nice info, while some others reject it.

But none of those do what I'm really looking for, namely checking for registration to a salvage company or being flagged as stolen.

Those are supposed to be covered by vehiclecheck.co.za and carvalue.co.za, but neither of those have the VIN number on their systems.

Is that normal, or is it reason for concern?

What you are asking for, requires access to eNATIS.

Decoding a VIN will tell you information about the vehicle, not the vehicle's status

I have used car value on several occasions and usually it's the licence number that does not return information, the VIN always come up with results, if it does not return information it should be a reason for concern but you can send transunion a mail or call them and ask about it.

It is also possible that they don't have the car's information on the system, unlikely but possible.

How do I get a genuine free VIN check?
The cheapest is R15 at First check.
Autotrader also has one for R99.

Free ones will just give you general details about the vehicle

The autotrader one (https://www.vehiclecheck.co.za) only charges the R99 if it has some information regarding the VIN.

Though I’ve had to do it twice to get one result (never received the results or invoice of the first one), was charged twice and never managed to get a refund, their customer service is simply not answering.

Pay with credit and do chargeback if they don't deliver.
