Vintage Computers

Wonder what would Sir Clive said when told his Speccy will last well into 2021 and be actively supported, with an active fan base? :)

Well you can't send him an email to ask because he does not use computers or email...

When contact with the skin has occurred, the affected skin should be flooded with water and then gently and thoroughly washed with soap and water. In the event of a large spill in contact with skin, wash and monitor for signs of poisoning, seek medical treatment if symptoms appear

Isopropyl alcohol is readily absorbed through the skin, so spilling large amounts of IPA on the skin may cause accidental poisoning. Small amounts of IPA on the skin is generally not dangerous, but repeated skin exposure can cause itching, redness, rash, drying, and cracking. Prolonged skin contact may cause corrosion. Always wash thoroughly with soap and water when contact with IPA occurs, and always use safety equipment when dealing with large amounts of IPA.

Exactly, so it won't "remove your skin if you rub it into your hands" as was originally posted. Maybe if you soak your hands in a bowl of isoprop for a few days ;-)

It is always best to minimise exposure, but it is not like you are working with some acid or somehting very harsh. I use stuff like paintbrush cleaner, thinners, pertrol, etc. without gloves, and its not a big deal. The isoprop is similar IMHO.

Spy Vs Spy tactics :

Very easy to win. All you need to do is to get the map up once (at the start of the game), make a mental note where the objects are, then boobytrap everything in that room, making your way towards the airport.

At the airport, you boobytrap everything in that room, then go into the next room, and wait for the other spy to come into the room leading to the airport.

When he do so, you just pop in quickly, causing him to drop all the objects he's carrying. Now either he'll open a boobytrapped object, or he'll go and get the solution for the boobytrap (which you've also boobytrapped).

And fly off upwards while you snigger. /sniggers

Now you just need to get the boobytrap removed, pick up the suitcase+items and skedaddle the hell out of Dodge City...

lol

For anyone wanting to restore an old machine... it's seriously dirty business lol.
This Osborne Exec I'm working on had mud wasps make nests in all four screw channels for the outer covers. The front was fine given that it's covered by the keyboard. I just took that panel off and took a look inside - it's pretty much immaculate looking in there. The PSU looks in great shape.

I've done 3 of 5 screws for the cover now where I've had to use a sharp goodie (tent peg / long nail sharpened) to dig out the wasp nest crap... boy that stuff stinks too. Have to wash hands between sessions. Slow going but I'm determined to get there without a stripped screw. Salvaging after stripping one of these deeply recessed cover screws will be heartbreaking. I'm itching to plug in and turn on but I want to disconnect the PSU from the mainboard before I test that.
PHODIES!!!!

WE DEMAND PHODIES!!!!

Just started a repair of a Macintosh IIsi. (From 1990) It the curse of the leaky battery bomb which has caused a big mess. 2 crystals beyond repair, as is the Motorola CPU. CPU's are still pretty cheap on eBay so will try and repair it.

This is one of those where its not economically viable to fix as its going to take days/weeks to check for corroded tracks and replacing faulty components, but its more of the challenge now. (And I have load of time to kill)

This is after the first round of cleaning. Looked a lot worse before.

Oooh, looks nasty.

Good luck with the clean-up effort (probably second to Fukushima/Chernobyl...)

Wow
1990
The year I was in Matric
I didnt know computers back then had removable RAM
there was DIMMS, and before that SIMS and before that SIPS
Something like that, a vague memory in my brain

Looks like an IDE socket at the top right, I dont recall that been around in 1990

That mobo looks like someone took a curry dump on it. Well Done if you can get that going again

Its a SCSI connector for a 80MB drive. I've got the drive but its most likely dead. Will replace it with a SD2SCSI emulator :)
SCSI, thats the one, jissus that was a long time ago, and they're awesome

SCSI, MFM and IDE were around in the early 90s I think.
SCSI was a PITA with a lot of devices.
early 90s yes I remember
But 1990?
My brain is fuzzy of that particular year
Party every weekend in Matric
Explains why I failed
I thought furk it afterwards and just went and did the army and moved on in life
