Violent clashes between mineworkers in Northam

LIMPOPO – An employee of Northam Platinum Mine, the deceased was a member of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, the man shot in the head by an unknown man, who then fled on foot.

“As far as we know, the murder sparked clashes between NUM members and members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), who are clashing on the Northam/Thabazimbi road near the Railway Gate. One person, reportedly an Amcu member, died after he was stabbed with an assegai,” said Otto.

Northam holds peace talks

Johannesburg - The management of Northam Platinum in Limpopo on Wednesday said talks would continue with all parties to resolve the situation at the Zondereinde mine and return employees to work.

“A mass meeting to be attended by the NUM, management and the SAPS has been scheduled to be held on the mine this morning,” Northam Platinum said in a statement.

4 arrested in connection with Northam Platinum murder

JOHANNESBURG – Four suspects were arrested last night at Northam Platinum in connection with last week's violence that left a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and an Association of Metalworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) member killed.
