A group of over 300 protesters blockaded the M35 Umbumbulu Road, south of Durban, on Monday morning.

They gathered at 05:00 and began erecting burning barricades on the main road through the area, police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said.

The M35 is a key route to the province, providing an alternative route to the N3 from Pietermaritzburg to the coast.

“They are complaining about the nomination of a ward councillor. The situation is obviously more complicated than that, but it has something to do with the nomination of someone in that area.”

Zwane said police officers had been sent to the area and were monitoring the situation.

He could not confirm reports that a truck travelling on the road had been waylaid and torched.

Just don't vote or vote for another party...

Don't think most KZN residents even know that there are other parties, many of us a like robots that vote for one party in each election

Monitoring the situation = watching it burn

Tossing rocks on the road has always been a favorite pastime of folks in those areas...
Used to camp out often in Scottburg in late 90's and travel from PMB via that route.

Cop shot in violent Folweni protests

The officer was shot in the leg during protest action in the township south of Durban.

There have been running battles between police officers and residents this afternoon as the protests continue for a second day.

Earlier, the protesters hurled stones at police who retaliated with tear gas.

Some of the residents of Folweni are unhappy about the ANC candidate that has been nominated for the local government elections due to take place later this year.

They want the candidate removed from the top of the list and replaced with another potential councillor whom they believe will do a better job of delivering services to them.

Riot police, roll through and arrest the lot of them....

Dealing with this lot with kid gloves in some ways HAS to stop.... and we can't give in to their demands even if they're valid....

They need to deal with their grievances in the proper channels that doesn't impact innocent people the way this type of protest does.
