Didn't think too much about it at the time, but I just realized VA takes down all the CC details when signing up. CCV, Expiry date...everything. And its not like they just decided on that on the spot...their forms etc are designed for CCV fields etc.

So now there is a piece of paper floating around somewhere with enough info on it to buy stuff in my name. Sure waiter etc could easily copy this info too, but its still mighty sketchy imo.

Thoughts?

Just one more reason to only go to gyms with a pre-paid option.

Well, you type this into the Internet when buying something online. However, if they have a card reader it's not neccessary.

Do you get a copy with these details on ? Make sure you do. If you don't, ask them for and be sure to tell them your concerns and need the copy for any police fraud investigation should there be any dodgy deductions coming off your account.

At the end of the application process, the details are captured in their system and the actual form is probably filed away somewhere. In any case, access to either the form or the system details, are usually controlled, so if anyone were to unlawfully access it, they(VA) would know, and you would have recourse to act if any illegal deductions were made.

Several ISPs I contacted also insisted on this info, so I gave those ones a miss.

I was in Nedbank last week and on the floor in front of the enquiries counter was a photocopy of someone's ID and attached to it was the new credit card receipt which the customer had just signed. I called the manager over and gave it to her. She demanded to know where I had found it and when I told her, said several times, "are you sure" and said it was not possible for me to have found it there, implying that I had somehow gone behind the counter and stolen it, in full view of the cameras and staff, etc. So I suggested she ask the enquiries ladies about it and was told that she was quite capable of doing her job thank you!

When you order pizza delivery and pay by card they ask you for all these details... the person taking the order could easily write the details down. Yes, it is risky but laziness dictates that it is easier than having to jump in the car to go and draw money. Might as well drive to the pizza place too then.

Ultimately I guess its just a risk one has to take.... :(

Its not a question of whether the info is provided, but rather whether it is stored. Storing the CCV for example is against Visa rules.
