So my daughter was on my Discovery Vitality, and her student non-peak hours all-gyms Virgin Active membership was R325 per month. Then she moved onto her own medical aid, no Vitality, and the rate jumped to R625pm. Is that a normal student rate? Anyone know what options are available? Virgin Active have given us several stories, including encouraging her to sign up for a two-year membership. She has 4 months left on her contract at the moment.

That's the normal rate without Vitality. It does include country wide Virgin Active entry though. She can get cheaper if she only needs access to a single branch.

Normal nationwide is closer, if not over, R900

Premium for non students is about R1000pm. Clubs like Bedford are R900pm or so. It's expensive yo!

She can look at a few options:
Changing to a selected by her VA.
IE cant use others

Signing up for gym 0800-1700. She won't be let in before 8. Pretty much off peak gymming only.

She can move to VA red gyms.

Stay where she is

Find out pricing at other gyms. Then use the option that suits her/her budget.

Fark me it has changed a lot since I last walked into a VA. Was R680 last time I checked. I will stick to my local privately owned gym in that case.

Edit:According to their website:
R775 - R925 P/M for Full access to all clubs, countrywide
R555 - R675 P/M Access to selected clubs countrywide

I miss the Health and Racquet days where R3,000 got you a lifetime membership.

VA have added nothing significant since taking over, while making it simply unaffordable if you're not part of a particular rewards scheme...

Wow, I pay R147pm at my company's gym. Those prices are insane. I've actually never been inside a VA gym, what's makes them so special?

I honestly do not know. The gym I am currently with costs R205 p/m and the facilities are as good as any VA I have ever been inside...

Well they've added profitability so at least they can stick around!

yep when I joined it was R36 pm. No joining fee.

My personal preference.....a lot less bikes and treadmills and a lot more plates and barebells

Wow. Had no clue VA monthly fees are so high. Am on the old vitality scheme where I pay "nothing" for it if I go at least 3 times a month.
