Ok, so I decided to go to the gym (after an absence of, ehm, 4 years!!!!
Thing is I stay just a stone throw away from the 'Virgin', so I decide why not?
Since I'm with FNB, there's this thing called FNB Value Add, basically if you are on the package that I'm on, you qualify for 15% off joining fee. So I called them on Wednseday and gave them my details. I was told that Virgin will then contact me to make the necessary arrangements. But I'm still waiting....

So, I just wonder how much is that darn joining fee anyway, what about the monthly subscription then?

Thanks guys

Last time I checked it was R430/pm its cheaper to go join a dance class or start a martial art. Wish I was still with discovery medical aid :(

People who buy their medical aid for the gym membership do not make sense to me... ask what their co-payments are, what procedures are not covered, what percentage of NHRPL is covered and they have no idea but they have free gym membership! Well even that is not free as you have to pay for Vitality and upfront joining costs!

OP my monthly is R309 and the joining fee was waived as they had a special offer on at the time but if I recall the joining fee was R400 odd

I'm on Discovery but dont have Vitality. So, with Vitality how much it is?

R595 once off fee and then R35 per month membership as well as the Vitality membership cost... it used to be around R90! You also then need to use the gym a certain number of times to maintain your membership.

just remember one thing, no matter what the cost do not sign more than a 1 year contract

nothing like deciding after 3 weeks you dont want to gym anymore and paying for the next 2 and half odd years and never going

AFAIK other medical schemes also subsidize Virgin memberships. Sure there's a co-pay but it's better than being whacked with full membership fees.

Momentum does I think.

Yup, if you have any policy with Momentum (doesnt have to be medical aid) you can sign up for Momentum Multiply.

Once on Multiply, you pay the approx R600 joining fee for the gym and then i think its about R120 per month for national membership. For membership to a specific club, its less. You have to go to the gym 36 times during the year else, you forfeit the joining fee and have to pay the R600 joining fee again for the next year - if you still want to use the gym the next year.

Kinda works out to about R210 a month (monthly VA national membership cost + monthly Momentum Multiply cost)

I think on discovery vitality its cheaper.

c'est gratuite!!

C'est Bullmerde. You do pay extra for vitality. And for keeping in line with minimum use requirements on any program. It's this simple folks. Don't waste money on coffee. They have a revolving door and a reception desk.
Swipe in. walk across to the exit, and walk out. C'est Simple.

I actually take my boy there to get some swimming practise. So while he's down in the pool, I get on a treadmill, set it to a leisurely pace, and stroll away while staring into the distance (being the spinning class opposite the pool ;)) 20-25 minutes later, he's done 50 or so laps and I've walked 2km  75 bucks a year per kid is not bad

U guys talk about R700 joinin fee, R120 per month Membership, R90 per month Vitality = man thats over 3 grand per annum! No ways! Me dont have that kind of money!

I'd rather do some roadworks every evening, push ups, stomach excercise etc. Or, just go to my old varsity & get a Gym Membership (I still have contacts there).

I was on Vitality and had a gym membership for 3 years no prob. I paid R595 once off and nothing else. Then in my last two years I decided to go 'national' and paid the R90 pm month without going to any other gym :o
So you could basically get away with R700 once off I think and nothing else provided you go to gym 3 or 2 times a month. But yeah you can swipe your card and go read the notice boards before going home again :D
The vitality fee pm should not just be seen as the "gym" fee because you get discounts on flights, cars, hotels etc.

I have since moved to "a financial company" in the northern suburbs in CTN ( ;) ) and on Friday I joined a "fitness and leisure" facility on a 24 month contract but there is no joining fee and R125 pm x 24. I can have this money deducted from my salary every month i.e. pre-tax money so there is a saving too. They do have an admin fee each year of R180.

I know that the joining fee could be waived off if I use this FNB Value Adds thinging, but if I understand u well, are u sayin I can avoid payin the vitality fee by goin to de gym at least thrice a month? Moreover, what if u wanna go to de gym mo than thrice a month? I guess I need to consult both VA and Discovery to get mo info on this.

Hi there! Old post ressurrection, I know. Just wanted an approximate cost of a one month subscription at virgin active. Also, will it be cheaper if I'm on medical aid (momentum health)? Thanks in advance!

I know discovery is cheaper, don't know about momentum, check your benefits.
As for the monthly price, Vanderbijlpark is R270, Bryanpark is R459. So it differs.
Phone your club and ask.
