Virgin Mobile Connection

I looks like the current state of the VM network is gonna make me eat my signature.

Have been unable to connect since yesterday afternoon. No error messages ... just nothing ?

It looks like Virgin is giving a number of problems at this stage. There have also been alot of complaints about network problems such as "unable to call or sms" etc. Virgin is walking the same road as Cell C......

Ok, I am convinced...getting my VM card...
Will keep you quys updated.

Thanks
Baka

Yes, yes!!
Finally got online using Vm card.
inserted the carded, activated, made a chargable call then voila.
remember to enter the access point "vdata".
restart machine.
and surf!

I've got the same deal as redarrow: no disconnects, lock ups and bored connection. I'm using a 64k sim in a motorola 1050. VM speeds almost unusable. Better when roaming on VC. Usable but nothing significant.

surfing at 460k per sec*
No, I think you'll find you are communicating with your phone at 460kbps.
Surfing will be a whole lot less.
Where is the footnote to go with your asterisk?

Well i could not conect to vm at all last night (27/oct) between 5pm and 8 pm, but since 8pM, and still continuing i have been getting great speeds, i am only using normal gprs, no edge as i dont have an edge enabled phone.

I truely hope this keeps up, as i was impressed with vm at the beginning, but lately i have been quite dissapointing. Maybe this is the turning point

connecting via samsumg e370 - connection is lame tonight
lst nigh connected via nokia 6280 - connection was great.

could this be a prob...

Now connecting with my NOKIA 6280 again, the connection speeds is much better. :)

Very bad tonight.
I get this message all the time:
"Firefox can't find the server at www.iol.co.za."

I seem to spend all the time reloading pages that should load properly in the first place. Probably costing me more,,

Have you tried roaming on Vodacom? For me it works better than just working of Virgin.

Got VM and never looked back

Since getting my VM card at Woolworths for R55 i never looked back.
Got activate within 30 mins and started browsing therafter.
Most of the time iam connected at 460k/s....
Well the connection speeds says 460k/s but really in South Africa we would have to divide that by 10. Meaning that i really connect at 46k/s which still is farily good - i think.

Anyone else with a VM card - please let me know about ur experience.

VM says they will be upgrading the network soon to use 3G so let hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Happy VM Customer

I'm assuming you’re connecting using your pc via a data cable / Bluetooth with your phone. The connection speed Windows/Other OS reports to you are NOT you internet connection speed as with Dialup. The speed is just your connection speed between your pc and your phone(modem)!!

This speed can be set by yourself. You can set is as low as 1200bps or as high as 921600bps. Your setting is just set at 460800bps and does not show your real internet speed.
[EDIT]
Screenshot of the modem speed settings:

Glad to hear you are happy with VM!

Ok, thanks!
I know how to set the modem speeds. So the speed at the bottom right is merely the link speed between phone and pc...so then how do i check the actual internet speed at which i am sending and recieving data?

On the top of the MyADSL home page is a link to several speed tests (local and international). My opinion is that a local speed test gives you a better indication of your internet speed because is is not throttled by the international link.

You can also use a program like BWMeter which gives you a graphical indication of your instantaneous internet speed.

Sometimes I wish I knew what you guys were talking about. I hardly ever have any disconnects. The last disconnect was over 2 weeks ago. I've never really been "inconvenienced" by disconnects and i download mp3s every day using mIRC:)
