Virgin Mobile in the UK

I guess virgin sa has to play within the boundaries set by the big four.

And then you look at the data rates in the UK and realise that Virgin is screwing the Brits by asking nearly 50 times more than in SA

My guess is that over there mobile data is considered something special - here the networks are trying to compete with adsl

Here they are somewhat competitive. In the UK mobile data is exorbitant.

You also have scummy things like Vodafone's so-called unlimited data account which costs about R500 - the small print says it is actually limited to 1Gb.

You pay R480 for the first 12 months and R384 for the last 12 months then you get:

500 free minutes and 1000 sms's.

Isn't that just great????

that doesn't sound too great to me ... I pay R100 pm, got a free phone + 85/15 minutes + 15 sms free per month

I hardly every use half of what I have so I see no point in having 500 minutes and paying R480?!

Mobile data rates on Vodafone with a contract is actually cheaper than SA I think it is GBP80 for unlimited data

From vodafone's site:
* The Vodafone Data Unlimited and Vodafone Data Travel price plans are subject to Vodafone's fair usage policy. This means that a customer's UK usage must not exceed 1Gb per user account in a month. We don't expect customers to go over this limit however if a customer's usage is in excess of this, we may ask them to moderate their usage. If a customer then fails to do so, we reserve the right to move them to another Vodafone Data price plan or to charge for all excess usage. Long-term or persistent usage in excess of the limit may also result in suspension or termination of the service.

Sure - but it is a completely different environment there. Mobile data isnt touted as a replacement for cable based data like it is here. Most people really arent going use that much data on their cellphone when they almost certainly have a high speed connection at home.

I agree that is sucks them putting a f.u.p. on an 'uncapped' account but its the way they market there because they're allowed to. Fortunately I dont think they would get away with it here - but I'm sure they would if they could.
