I know Virgin doesn't have BIS but why can't I use a BB with their sim only for calls and sms's?

I don't see why it wouldnt work. Have you tried it?
Is your phone not perhaps network locked?
My brother tried MTN and Vodacom. They both work. As soon as he inserts the Virgin one the phone switch off after he enters the PIN. I told him to remove the PIN from the sim in another phone and try again. But then the phone switch off immediately after he it starts up.
You can use it just as you would any other phone, you would just have to input all settings manually, mms and browsing will be fine, but not BBM or Push Mail.
I only know where to put in the internet setting, not sure how to manually input mms setting and considering its virgin mobile they probably would not even be able to tell you what the settings are to put in even if you found out where.
Best bet would be to remain with a service provider instead of lucky packet mobile.

There is no such thing as network locking in SA now, if your ISP locks ur phone all you need to do is threatten them with court and its sorted, but as they banned locking about 2/3 years ago (i stand under correction, it was banned when porting came in).
Much longer before that. I can't even remember receiving a network locked phone, you're looking at a good 6-7 years (though I think number porting highlighted the issue on older phones).

Nope, you must remember they only locked pre-paid handsets and it was only locked with 3rd party sellers like edgars and glomail. Phones shipped to direct branches of the providers were never locked as they never saw any reason to lock contract phones, irrespective of what network sim you using you are obligated to pay them either way.
It was simply too much trouble to mark the boxes and have seperate stock for prepaid and contract sales at provider branches.
