Hi there guys. What speeds do you get with your VM sim?

The fastest I got so far was 115kb/s (14.375kB/s). And the thing I don't understand is that it was with GPRS because my i-Mate Jasjar only have GPRS and 3G. It doesn't use EDGE.

I think it's excellent speed.

What do you get?:D

When i get my sim I'll let you know.;)
bear in mind that it is probably only the few users on this forum with 128k sims that are currently accessing the network so i should hope its good. Mind you we on cell c's network...

The speed you saw was your USB connection to your Jasjar?

Nope, It wasn't connected to a notebook. I was using the Jasjar on it's own. I have GPRS Monitor running on my Jasjar. It shows your Data Speed. GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA. So that was the download speed, not a connection speed or something.

Not in my area - They only use Vodacom's towers where they have not got coverage. I have noticed that the VM sim displays VODACOM and VIRGIN underneath it when it is tuned to a Vodacom tower unless that was a fluke.

Very interesting

Wonder what's happening here... it's definately a 3G instrument... but... possibly with Vodacom towers in the mix, you are unofficially getting 3G... ;)

When I put my VM sim in my Jasjar it shows Cell-C. And in my Nokia 9300 it shows Virgin. I never see it display Vodacom.

Hi

I have a Nokia 6680 and I get about 110k/bits on average. I am very happy. It is actually a bit faster than MTN...And at 50c a meg!:)

To really max out the connection, use a download manager. Try downloading 3 or 4 different files simultaneously with multiple threads. I have gotten 220 kbps like that with my 6680 on EDGE.

And it doesn't say Vodacom anywhere and so I would think that it is probably the CellC network. It is not that reliable sometimes and so I would lean more to thinking that I am connecting using CellC's network! :p

That is the best part, 50c/MB. The added speed is a bonus. Can't wait for Virgin to lauch 3G.:p

The fastest speed I got on VM was 218K bits per sec at 7am in the morning using a 6230i as a modem connected to PC.

That was really fast - about as best as EDGE gets!

Never got that speed again. And during the rest of the day and at night the speed is much much slower - probably busy network.

Here you will find more Speed results from VM (and sometimes other networks)

I also can't wait until they get 3G. I must admit that Virgin Mobile have actually given me some hope for Internet access in South Africa for the first time in a long time! :D

Hi guys

Last night @21:30 I got 460.kbps on my Nokia N80 with VM sim,and this morning @8:00 I got 115kbps with my Nokia 6600 with a MTN sim.I don't believe it either, but it's true,I did all to test and this is the results.
Iam at worknow so I cannot post the test result, because it's from my home PC.Go Well:confused:

Again, I have to say that that is not your actual download speed but the maximum modem speed in your modem setting.

I bet it was 115.2 and 460.8

To test your actual speed do the simple speed test http://212.19.68.252/speed.html

Is it just me or do things seem to have slowed down drastically?
Here are my latest results...
First 128K 10985 msecs: Download speed = 11932 Bytes per sec, Approx = 99K bits per sec
Second 128K 12437 msecs: Download speed = 10539 Bytes per sec, Approx = 88K bits per sec
Third 128K 8203 msecs: Download speed = 15979 Bytes per sec, Approx = 133K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 20532 msecs: Download speed = 6384 Bytes per sec, Approx = 53K bits per sec

Done 9.32 am Wednesday 2 Aug

Ouch.... and an hour later:
First 128K 121672 msecs: Download speed = 1077 Bytes per sec, Approx = 9K bits per sec
Second 128K 34437 msecs: Download speed = 3806 Bytes per sec, Approx = 32K bits per sec
Third 128K 20516 msecs: Download speed = 6389 Bytes per sec, Approx = 53K bits per sec
Fourth 128K 29031 msecs: Download speed = 4515 Bytes per sec, Approx = 38K bits per sec

YUK!!!!!!
