Virgin Mobile

Yeah, if they charge 50c per MB and the other operators don't respond immediately. I'm going to change over, regardless of number portability.

Virgin Sub-Forum

I think we need a new sub-forum for Virgin. I can tell that there is going to be a lot of talk.

I agree!!!!!!

I haven't followed the whole Virgin Mobile thing closely, but has it been confirmed that Virgin will even be offering its own "broadband" service via say EDGE on CellC's network? IMO we should wait until after VM has officially launched [min dae now], and if they are going to offer "broadband" then a new forum [not a sub-forum of CellC] can be added for Virgin Mobile, although maybe VM should be a sub-forum since VM would be more of a CellC reseller|service-provider as opposed to a network operator...

I see in another thread Nokia already has the Virgin APN settings available on their website.

How does this virtual operator thing work? Do you have to buy a new simcard?
Would they have their own network code, like 655 01 for VC?

@ IC

It seems they will be utilising Cell C's edge capability as they explain what edge is on their site. Not conclusive but rather obvious.

Why would anyone want to use Cell c's already slow and sad data network? Even for 50c i still think its not worth it.

True unfortunately. I really have little choice but to stay with MTN anyway as I found out today that only one base station in my area is edge capable, and for that I have to drive 15km to Newcastle East, which consists mostly of informal settlements.

Probably not, they dont have their own network in the rest of the nations that they operate.

Does any1 know if with time virgin will get it own license and start putting up its own towers ?

No, this would sort of kill the whole virgin mobile philosophy: 'piggy back on other networks so we don't have to spend fortunes building our own'

Building a network from scratch is a HUGE task, and noone is gonna do it if they have viable alternatives.

So the piggys backs still got control of them right?
Only Icasa is on Virgins side, otherwise they wont get to far!
