Virtua Fighter 5 is a difficult game to judge. The fighting engine is second to none. Just based on mechanics alone, it's one of the greatest fighting games I've played. The level of character customization is exciting and can lead to some very unique looking fighters. But everything else comes up a little flat. The interface is mediocre and the AI is unsophisticated. The environments, which lack good ambient sound and graphical flare, are a bit of a disappointment. So too is the lack of online play. The absence of the network aspects that made the arcade version so cool haunts the gameplay modes. This is a game that belongs online, and part of the overall experience feels hollow without network play. Virtua Fighter 5 gets a lot right and in the places it matters most. You won't find a more technically demanding fighter on any system. Virtua Fighter 5 is a great fighter, but with the dawn of the next-generation of gaming, more is needed to make for a true classic.

So an up and down review really....

The things I notice the most out of all the PS3 reviews are..

1. Bad AI (I have heard this is linked to the cell processor)
2. Shallow gfx (bottle neck on the gpu)
3. No online (They don't have anything to compete with Live!)

Thoughts?

lol I was trying to be a bit more open minded about it.

It really can't be as bad as most people make it out to be... Sony [-]have always[/-] usually make good products...

The Playstation network requires the developers to setup a server for the game which they then control independently of Sony...

That is not a real online service because you will never know when the developers will turn the server off.

It also means your friends lists will never work on all games developed by everyone. The idea is fatally flawed and will have to be redone if they ever want to compete with Live!.

Saying it is not as mature yet means you expect it to one day compete with Live! and currently that is not possible.

Apparently this game sells horrible in Japan.
Even less than Dead or alive 4.

Shame...

48000 units in week one is not fantastic, consider GoW did about 35000, and Blue Dragon did about 80000, and that's on the "adults only" 360.

I think Sony have shot themselves in the foot, like with a blunderbuss, and BR is backfiring. Everyone is buying the PS3 as a movie player and not a games console. They might very well win the HD format war, but I'm betting downloadable media is going to make it a hollow victory. Just look at how it's causing a drop in CD sales .
Todays NPD January stats are grossly telling, Even with product readily available the 360 is outselling the PS3 but about 10%. (Wii still kicken both their a$$es ;)

The fanboys have all bought theirs, now the regular customers are going, why?

irony?

Isnt Virtua fighter a game mainly designed by SEGA ? And now a SEGA game is a possible saviour to the platform that killed it

Yeah the irony is strong in this one :)

But since Sega is not a Sony developer I wonder if it is going to move over to the Xbox at all?

*sigh* I wish people would stop comparing the PS3 with the 360. The PS3 was released a month or 2 ago, the 360 had more than a year to sort out it's problems and get a good library of games. Give the PS3 a year and then compare the 2...

Yeah I agree, but maybe if King Ken had kept his arrogance to himself the PS3 would not be nailed so hard...

Glad to know "The next generation is here now" Pity it's worse than what we have had for over a year..

Oh and the PS3 was only delayed due to problems with the Blu-Ray

Tsk tsk, didn't you know? It's already been announced for the 360. It's due out in about 3 months time, they need the delay to incorporate the online play. ;)

Kidding, looks like it's offline on the 360 as well.

U doubt it will be offline for the 360... They make such an issue about every game being Live! enabled..

Hopefully they will get online play going but if not at least we will be able to compare scores online easily.

@Retro: No. Why? They're both available now, and the one needs to justify why it's twice as expensive.

Well by about this time in the 360's life span it already had awesome titles like GRAW and Oblivion, and those were next gen out the box from scratch. Not only have the PS3 dev kits been out nearly as long as the 360 kits, but developers can (and it definitely seems as if they are) use the 360, with it's better tools as the primary platform and port to PS3, so the only hard work is the port.

Well I really hope they get Online enabled, but the only thing more latency sensitive than an FPS is a fighting game.

I got muddles with Virtua Tennis 3 which is online for 360, but not PS3. (Gotta get that one!)

Then the Xbox360 is failing really bad compared to the NES, SNES, Megadrive etc. All available now and all with thousands of quality titles and the consoles and games are REALLY cheap!

;)

To the contrary, it's kicking all the aboves behinds, it sure as heck is outselling the lot of them and has a much greater active userbase.

It may be outselling then NOW, but I'm sure all the others sold more units and games in total. Plus it's waaay cheaper. ;)

The Wii has outsold the PS2, Xbox360 and PS3 in the US.

If current trends continue then nearly 30% of US households will have a Wii ... now who would have thought that the machine with the weakest hardware spec will win the next console race ????.
