virus please help

Future tip, get a vm machine and run keygens etc that you not sure of in that, easy to trash a vm if needed, not so easy to format a pc and start again. Also get bartpe or a live disk to scan from.

Forget the so-called "free" anti-virus software. Rather spend a few bucks and get some decent anti-virus software, like NOD32. The following anti-virus software sucks big time:

AVG
Avast
Panda
Symantec / Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee

NOD32 have obtained over 60 Virus Bulletin Awards for their software. I have not used Microsoft Security Essentials yet and therefore cannot comment on it. But always remember that if you go with one of the above packages, you get what you pay for and must not be surprised if you have to spend regular time to reformat your pc because of a virus / rootkit / trojan horse.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is excellent software but sometimes infected pcs refuse to run it. So you may try the following utilities:

Combofix - www.combofix.org
TDSSKiller - http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip

The TDSS family of rootkits also prevent anti-virus software as well as some utilities to function properly. When infected with a TDSS family rootkit, you may notice when executing software to disinfect, that it creates a fake process consuming between 1900KB to 1910KB. The TDSSKiller utility will take care of that

Through experience, I've also noticed that some online virus scanning websites fails to disinfect a pc properly - rather use Eset's online scanner: http://www.eset.com/online-scanner

At the end of the day it all comes down to whether you have decent anti-virus software installed or not.

There is no such thing as the best antivirus. Avast is decent, you clearly haven't used it.

Avast sucks and I shall never recommend it to any of my clients. I'm also not interested to use it as I've seen many clients with "up-2-date" avast installations but it still did not detect any infections. The same for AVG. I have a vast amount of knowledge in the IT industry (more than 10 years) and know what I'm talking about. Don't fool yourself thinking that you have "protection" after installing AVG or Avast - you will regret it as it will eventually gives you more headaches than pleasure with regards to your pc.

I understand what you are saying, but I trust Avast and so do a lot of other PC users. We do, because we believe it better than what you use. It is the same with you, you believe your antivirus to be better than Avast. None is in all cases better than the other. Each antivirus has its good and bad points. And of course, some do have way more bad points than good points.

Think I made my point. :)

had a very similar virus (could be the same) had avast installed and it did pick it up however as a result the pc kept re-starting and when it did work avast should freeze, anyways i backed it up on an ext hdd, i then formated the drive and re-installed xp and installed avast again, then i scheduled a boot scan. i set the boot scan to scan all hdd's so when it i restarted the pc i quickly connected the backup on the ext hdd and it was scanned as well .... anyways the bootscan picked up the malware and i deleted it... the pc has been running fine since then ... what a relief !

Thanks Reuben, I agree with you.
I also installed ariva, and it picked up things.

When inserting a memory stick, ariva also picked up something bad there.
avast did not.

Format doesn't always work either. I've had virusses reappear straight after a fresh install without connecting to the internet and only installing an antivirus.

It is always best to do a repartition before doing a format on an infected drive. Also don’t go for the quick format.

what he said.
except i'd use ubcd4win. http://www.ubcd4win.com/contents.htm
comes with antivirus and disk tools and ff for an online scan.
boots from cd and loads os into ram.
resolves gary's issue of changing the tyre while driving.
