hello all
i am very confused:/ last week i have got a new computer with XP and nortons 2004pro(updated) on it.all was working well.the next day telkom guys came to install ADSL and the minute they left my computer started acting.nortons was informing me there are viruses but is unable to repair it.the comp started to hang and it was impossible to do anything.i reinstalled the system(full format and the rest) and before i set up adsl all was fine.the minute i installed the drivers for the modem(telkom one) and went an line all hell broke lose again.once again i formated the drive and started from scrach. this time however i did not install modem drivers i went to my office(in different part of durban) and since i have a network there all i did was plug the network cable and was on line(adsl) . i prepared for the worst... but nothing happened.i was able to browse the net for hours with no problem.i phoned telkom just to be told that there is no problem from their side and i should have had firewall on my computer before i connected to the internet at home. funny thing is .. i have no firewall at the office and everything went well but at home all hell breaks lose.i can only think that the software they (telkom)suplied or the modem is corrupt. has anyone had the same problem and what the heck is this all about??!!! any help on this matter would be great as i would like to prove to telkom that the problem lies on they side.

Logically, if you used exactly the same unit at both your home and the office, and there was no software configuration change of any kind - other than your connectivity mechanism - then the problem does not lie with your machine at all. Methinx you have a dirty line problem at home, though this does not explain why Norton reports this as a virus issue. Perhaps if you have a mate who is willing to risk contamination of his/her unit, you could ask him/her to connect up from your home, and see if the symtoms appear for him/her as well...

hello
yeah, it was the same unit with no changes.
is it possible to have a "dirty line problem" ? and how do u pick it up? i presume that if that's the problem then telkom should be responssible for it, am i right?

Quite right - Telkrap are responsible for the quality of the line. 'Dirty line' implies an absolute plethora of possibilities, all related to the quality of the service over the line. This could be attributable to attenuation, signal loss due to distance - and even the consequences of 09/11, if some of the whacky explanations doing the rounds are to be believed. Nevertheless, the bottom-line is that Telkrap _must_ be pressured into conducting an investigation - the surest way of doing this with evidentiary support of your demand, is to ask a mate to put his/her machine on your home line, and checking to see if the same symptoms result...

Telkom may be responsible for the quality of the line, but they aren't responsible for the quality of the internet.

Norton's would not detect a virus if your dsl line was shaky. Install a firewall, read the logs. You'll end up installing a firewall at the office too.

elbandito: Unfortunatelly with 24/7 access comes 24/7 dangers ... pple will hack you more and you will experience more attacks ...

The suggestions above are right. Get a firewall to protect yourself. And I'm not sure how much truth there is to this but pple in the forum have implied that Telkom techies are hacking PCs with their own ADSL access .. so once again install a firewall and trust noone ...

Hi there,

It might be that the IP address assigned to your network segment at home is static for a while. In other words it doesn't change when you login again and again. This can be the case for days on end sometimes. At work you get a differing IP address because it is on a different part of the Telkom net.

Some attacks on the net are aimed at vulnerable IP's and as long as the IP at home is perceived to be open to attack it will be attacked. This should change (and become somebody elses problem) when the IP is renewed. Fix your anti-virus software and update it before connecting. A quick search on this forum will reveal quite a few topics related to this very issue. Protection with 24/7 internet is critical!

Let us know how it goes...

well...
telkom " tech" came to change the modem.first of all i could not belive what he tried to do... he was trying to put a cd(modem drivers) into the stiffy drive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no offence to the guy but how does telkom employ people to be on the technical staff!!!
anyway...finally he got it all right and after putting the second modem all is fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
after this experience all i can say is TELKOM IS CRAP and i pray for a new company to caome and end telkoms monopoly

If you use the modem in router mode you are protected to a certain extent. The router should not allow any incoming traffic to your PC unless you ask for it first (opening a page in a web browser for example).

So... turned out to be a faulty modem, heh? Not surprising, given reports of the quality of the units being supplied by Telkrap. Anyway, first thing you _must_ now do is to action that noted by other posters - put in a firewall (recommend Smoothwall)!

ditto on the smoothwall .. you can use an old PC (PII with 64MB) for a basic firewall .. will have to be a dedicated PC as the firewall overtake the whole HDD ... but with 20-30 individual attacks logged on my firewall each day ... (as I said in othe rpost 60% of them from other ADSL users) the firewall is worth EVERY cent !!! (if' it's old PC then it's free :) and the firewall is also free 40MB download for CD ISO)

Yeah, Smoothwall or IP-Cop. They're basically the same product.

I use McAffee personal firewall and it's a lot easier if you only have 1 PC at home and can run it resident on the PC.

It does the job just fine unless you want more granular control and logging capabilities. Some will say it's crap just because it's MS [;)]

This looks more like the Telkom connector on the pc is not firewalled. The office network is probably firewalled at its gateway, so anything plugged in will automatically be protected.

I suggest that you look at the properties of youe Telkom connector and make certain that it is firewalled.

thickheads all of you

a dirty line so you saying the line has virus's lol you guys are rather thick.

the telkom guy tried to put it in the stiffy drive to be honest i dont believe that story for a second. so he didnt know where it went but could set up your computer makes no sense.

adsl is amazing for me nothing goes wrong it always working and i just downgraded and im saving 250 a month

you guys bi^ch and moan to much.

virus come from the internet not adsl line's and norton doesnt protect you from everything. norton is rated as 7th best anti virus so they aint so good.

From one thickhead to another :p

Without an ounce of seriousness I suggest a conspiracy afoot against elbandito, his adsl line has bugs and the bugs are listening in - perhaps the bigCIA with one of them bugs that works on power lines ;) ...
