My moms PC packed up yesterday, does not boot into Vista.
Its clear that the crappy Samsung PATA drive has got damaged sectors and I can hear it groaning when trying to read the drive.
So far I have taken the drive out and put it in my XP machine which automatically runs CHKDSK and has managed to recover some data and orphaned files although 20k is still unreadable. I can now browse the drive ok under XP.
I put the drive back in the Vista machine but it still wont boot, also booted up with Vista disk and tried to run "repair" but it says "Vista was unable to repair probelm preventing Vista from booting".
Is there a way I can replace the boot sector and get it bootable again? I seem to think the drive information saying that the "drive is bootable" is missing or damaged.

Thanks in advance for any assistance...btw I know I will have to replace this drive at some point cos of the bad sectors

If memory serves, you can use the dos command format /mbr. not sure if it works in vista though...

Hmmm ok....does not know that command.
Anyway in the process of trying to find a programme to get the data back I got hit by a Trogen ..... ****! 11 types 554 infections! My fault....I clicked!:mad::mad::mad:
