Good afternoon everyone

Ok so the title is exactly my problem. I decided to try out vista eventually because i got bored with XP. So i have the 32bit Business version. It works great but i have a big problem. Whenever i install nvidia drivers it crashes. I install them, reboot PC, as it loads into windows it sort of shutsdown (monitor goes off) but the pc is still running. I have to boot into safe mode, uninstall the drivers and then it works again. I tried using the latest (180) and the 178 versions, both do the same.

My specs are :
CPU : AMD 6000+ X2
Ram : 2gb DDR2
HDD : 1x500gb, 1x250gb
GFX : Nvidia 8800GTS 320mb
OS : Vista business 32bit. SP1 installed

Any ideas why this is happening?

Maybe the resolution it is changing to after the drivers are installed, isn't supported. What screen do you have?

This could be the problem.

The Screen resolution settings are too high and ur screen cannot display at that level. In the boot options check to see if there is an option to boot using VGA MODE (Windows Xp has this).

If it does, then boot using that and once u in windows set ur desktop resolution to 1024X768 at 32bit level, then after that increase as needed.

Um i got the Samsung 932GW LCD. Im running my res at 1440x900 (native). Busy downloading older drivers. Ill try out what u suggested in 3 min and let you guys know. Thanks for the info

Nope, doesnt work. I tried booting in VGA mode (didnt work). Thing the first time it booted i got into windows and saw everything fine for about 20 seconds. then it just goes blank. I have to turn off the pc (holding power button down) for it to do anything. Rebooting just leaves it in the same state. hmmm

Have you tried to just switch off the pc by pressing the power button once after the screen goes blank. This might help us as well, cause then we know windows is still running and didn't stall. When the screen goes blank, does your monitor give any messages, eg: no signal detected or sleep mode or something?

I was just about to edit my post about that. Ok Windows does not stall, my previous comment on rebooting in the same state was completely wrong. Windows boots up lekker (can hear the sound) then the screen goes off. The little blue LED flashes basically saying no signal. In the top left it's like it just keeps searching going between Digital and Analogue. I tested both digital and analogue but it didnt help (even tried both at the same time). I was reading on other forums that what the drivers do is that they make the tv-out as the primary device, so i tried connecting it to my TV but i didnt get any picture on the TV.

What is the changes of you having 2 pc and they are maybe connected to a network? Is your tv always connected to your pc?

Same problem with my IBM, screens start flashing and then a notification says that Display Drivers aren't functioning properly... and then occasionally I get THE BLUE SCREEN...

Reload windows see if they helps, otherwise load xp see if you get the same problem, i had a problem when i loaded the vga drivers windows would not load them and it turned out the card was faulty.

i have 2 pc's(i think thats what u asking? :p ) other one is off and yes im connected to the network. Nope its never connected.

@ killa:

Ive had this setup since last year and been using XP the entire time (formatted about 12 times) and ive never ever had a problem. I guess ill just have to format and re-install :( did this earlier this morning. sigh oh well. Thanks guys ill check back in when im back online :)

kk, get RealVNC or something similar and load the server part on your pc (the one with the problem) and use the viewer part on the other pc to connect to this pc. You will have to do this before you load the driver, cause you can't load it in safe mode. Load the driver, reboot and when the screen goes blank, connect from the other pc to see what is your resolution and your primary display.

K now i know the PC is stalling. As soon as it booted it up i was able to connect via realVNC and then all of a sudden it froze and i was disconnected (when the screen went black). Time to reformat :D

hehe, thanks for your help though :) much appreciated

Edit: Screw vista. same thing again. Back to good ol' XP
