Today I was up in Jozi visiting a major supplier working on an image for a notebook, and I was shown their massive workshops. He informed me that they were getting in 7000 notebooks in an order... all to be downgraded from Vista to XP... and they charge for that.

Thats one order. Im sure it does not happen every day, but still, thats big.

I didnt know it was that bad

People don't like change, my Dad wanted his laptop downgraded because the Vista UI was too different but he settled into it and won't change back to XP now after being open to it.

Vista's biggest problem, by far, is the massive anti-hype around it.

Following that, its biggest problem is that running it with less than 1GB of RAM is unwise.

Well 7000 can only mean a big business wanting to downgrade for compatability.

I doubt those could be random consumer notebooks.

Yeah, I think it was one client.

Alot of people don't like vista including me its such a mission to get things working in vista . In the process of trying to make things easier for you they made things worse . Cause things don't work like they should.

Things do work in vista, it just takes a bit longer.

When xp was released, drivers where also a problem but nobody bitched nearly as much as they do with vista.

Problem vista has is very similar to linux if you ask me, most people cannot handle the change, they like their comfort zone.

If you take the time to get to know vista and use it, you will see how much better than xp it really is, its a shame that people who don't like microsoft have put such negative thoughts into people's heads about vista.

So many people will tell you vista is crap without testing it. Very sad how people put it down.

I will never in my life go back to xp, Vista runs my pc faster than xp ever did and everything is so smooth, stable and it looks really amazing.

This has nothing to do with any of the reasons above.

Killa, these are entry level notebooks.. I am pretty sure you would prefer XP on an entry level notebook over Vista. However, if you wish to fork out money for 7000 gaming machines that run Vista well. Im sure every corporate would be interested.

And the next person who uses the "perception" argument should join politics and stay outta IT.

He blamed certain South Africans for not being "careful" on how they communicated the issue of crime.

The president said it was the way they communicated that created the perception crime was out of control in the country.
Mbeki on crime...

Yea wizard i'm not talking about your comment, it was more directed that comment that vista does not work.

Problem is microsoft is not thinking clearly, Entry level should not be sold with vista. Any laptop with a dual core and 2 gig memory though should be fine, Also Vista is not like xp, its not a huge jump so it makes no sense why someone would sell people laptops with vista knowing full well that it wont run well.

Alot of entry level laptops come with xp and i think people who sell computers should also get blamed for selling laptops with vista and then charging for a downgrade, knowing its not going to run well.

So the saying "There is no such thing as bad publicity" doesn't count?

And that is why I recommend people to step out of their comfort zone and take the time to learn an other operating system, not Windows Vista.

I personally started to use Ubuntu and run all my needed Windows XP application in VirtualBox. Yes its not 100% as "easy" as Windows but I'm getting there and with Ubuntu pushing the boundaries with every release it's starting to become a good alternative.

And before you say I don't like Microsoft I just want to state I'm a .net Developer. I did run Windows Vista Business for a year before going back to Windows XP. I also have some techie friends that is pro Microsoft but doesn't like Vista and recommend XP to their clients, while they bash me for using Ubuntu.

Oh, and finally show me a secure Windows XP/Vista machine that starts up under 150 MB of RAM and is still pleasing to the eye.

Regards,

Yea but using Ubuntu has noting to do with comfort zone, Like i have said in the past, when linux can offer me everything on one platform i will make the switch, i want one OS to run my gaming and company needs and linux just does not do that now.

I don't want to run virtual box because everything i use requires windows.

Personally i think people should use what they like and not put down OS's before they have used them, while i have put linux i have never said its crap, i have only said it does not fit many people's needs in terms of windows apps and alot of games.

Lets not get into the whole linux thing again plz hehe

I was pretty anti-Vista too. But I bit the bullet after SP1 was released and set it up.
Getting used to the new interface & UI was a bit of a mission, considered downgrading again. But I stuck it out and now I love it.

Yes, XP is a good OS, but it's has many years of refinement

Agreed, if you are the type of person that wants to run the newest games every month your at the moment stuck with Windows(or buy yourself a gaming console).

But if you have some gems you want to play like Wow, Guildwars, Battlefield 2, Half Life 2, Call of duty 4 etc, Wine will be able to run it and you can start to think of stepping out of your comfort zone and run GNU/Linux.

If I may ask, what business related software do you use that GNU/Linux can't run and have you tried it with Wine?

Personally i think people should use what they like and not put down OS's before they have used them, while i have put linux i have never said its crap, i have only said it does not fit many people's needs in terms of windows apps and alot of games.

Like I said I used Vista and preferred XP over Vista. Imho why do one need more then 1 GB of memory to just run your operating system smoothly, and don't call that progress. Because I can show you just as functional and workable alternatives that runs on less resources.

Lets not get into the whole linux thing again plz hehe

*damn* This would have been my first. But I agree it's pointless, each to his own and my hell take the rest.

Regards,

Well corel draw x14, photo cs3, alot of new games like crysis, grid, blacksite etc.

I also use a program from vector magic which as far as i know does not run on linux, i use that alot along with corel draw.
