Hi chaps

I downloaded the Rc2 Microsoft Vista, installed and everything, it's all nice and shiny, but I encountered this problem, tried setting up my dsl and I can't install my modem

Vista doesn't want to accept the XP driver for my modem which is a:

Marconi DynaMiTe USB Modem

My main reason 4 setting up my dsl, (other than obviously the internet) is the whole 30 day activation story, is this activation necessary? (help documentation seemed vague, as if it was not necessary, but then again I could be too vague myself), because then I could use my XP for all internet related activities and I can then check Vista out at my leisure and not panic about drivers, that I am willing to bet don’t exist!

Otherwise to cut this horribly long story short; if anyone can direct me to a Marconi DynaMiTe USB Modem driver for Vista I would be eternally grateful!

Many USB items is still suspect re drivers even with Xp systems.

Activation is necessary. If you can't get access to the internet, then you can still activate by phone. If you go to activation, there should be this option. It's some 0800 number.

Is there not some "compatability mode" or something to run the installation of the driver in, the way you were able to run 95 and 98 programs in XP, or am I being doff?

This is one of the biggest reason why i am no longer using my USB modem and splashed out on a Netgear Router DSL modem. - Do yourself a favour - Throw that USB thing away - you WILL wonder why you didnt do it sooner!.

As this is a driver thread... a good foot to start out on with vista : make SURE you have the correct drivers for vista downloaded for your Graphics card - Especially if you are on Dual monitor.

Nero is NOT supported on Vista - but i did some digging and apparently Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 works (havent installed it yet.)
I've noticed lots of people moaning about Nero's slow adoption of the Vista OS.

Anti-Virus software is another issue... AVG installed perfectly, but causes errors as you go - the explenation : Vista takes care of its own and apparently don't need an antivirus... - absolutely hate this idea!...

Anybody else care to comment ?

Problem 1 :
Vista's built in DRM will not allow you to install kernel level drivers that are not signed. :p
Vista driver developers must obtain a Publisher Identity Certificate (PIC) from Microsoft. [] This costs $500 [EUR 412] per year, and as the name implies, is only available to commercial entities.

Problem 2:
Vista tries to force unsigned drivers to run in user space instead of kernel space.
You may be able to force install the XP driver using F8 during boot. (so I've read)

Ideally you need to get new Vista compatible drivers from Marconi.
If Marconi don't update their drivers for older hardware that means you'll have to buy a new modem.
This whole driver support issue is one of the reasons I dumped Windows and went to Linux. I can still run a brand spanking new Linux OS on an old Pentium I system if I want to (backwards compatibility).
I've seen the same thing happen to guys with scanners, printers, modems ...

Happy Microsofting buddy ;)

Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 is the devil in my opinion...

I fail to see what DRM has to do with drivers. Since when are drivers like music or copyrighted works (apart from the fact that distribution thereof may be an issue)

Linux is more appealing every day.

Well, it was to me, but maybe I have some kind of deficiency.

Doesnt Vista have onboard writing like XP?

yea it does - but if its as bad as XP's - i woulnt want to try. Besides, Nero is just that much better. Just a pitty it won't work with Vista......

Linux is more appealing every day.

It's an attempt to stop all the malware and rootkits that run at the kernel level.
If those are forced to run at user level then they can't do as much damage.
Once a rootkit has access at the kernel level it can do absolutely anything it likes regardless of system priviledges.

However it's also required to support Vista's new PVP-OPM which has to run at kernel level.
Protected Video Path Output Protection Management. Downgrades video resolution or blocks the picture entirely if the connected display doesn't support content protection.
(New expensive monitors, video cards, etc.)

I'll keep XP for the couple of games I play and when those get too old I'll just retire XP completely. I see no real advantage of upgrading to Vista if it just means more headaches and expense down the line. Linux does the job just fine.

get a router

Yup, wanna go with the router, got the stupid thing with the Telkom contract (stupid dumb ass move), and the router was also an option but I went USB cause it seemed more user friendly (not too clued up, but always learning), and Telkom didn't offer advice either, so they weren't much help! (not surprising)

Very disapointing, I like nero, and I was checking the Media center for the first time with my Vista installation, and I recon the one offerd by Nero is better!

Roxio? ROXIO?! I'd rather use a magnifying glass and some hot pins to burn CDs/DVDs than use Roxio. Right now I can't think of another product that rivals the absolute sh1tness of that product.

my 2c

Had nothing to do with DRM but the fact but that most of the crashes and BSOD in XP is caused by poorly coded device drivers according to their analysis of remote crash logss sent to them by Dr Watson.

WHQL driver certification is going to be much harder and tougher now to get and hence you need a driver certificate from Microsoft to ship to prove they tested and verified it.

It will only make Vista better.

Um no, you can still install unsigned drivers. nVidia forceware for instance is still unsigned for Vista. This has nothing to do with DRM at all. Video driver runs in user space not kernel. That's it.

You can still use Windows 5.1 drivers, I am using the onboard sound in Vista using the supplied driver CD, KX Project Driver for EMU 10KX also a 5.1 driver works in Vista.
