Oh yeah, I've seen this before.

The problem is that you have Vista installed. Try rolling back to Windows XP and the problem should sort itself out.

I get that in XP all the time, common to both OS's.

There must be something causing it, drivers or third party software etc.

I agree with EHV, it's not normal and definitely not a feature, I don't have that issue.

If it worked fine last week, boot into safe-mode and do a system restore to a previous date, should sort out the problem

Mine did that once, and that was during an update while I was watching a movie and doing a bunch of other things at the same time...other than that it stays running. Most likely third party software or some malware tryign to hijack explorer and making it crash...

Dumb question: Did you click on "Connect to the internet and find out whats wrong" button?
