I have a problem that makes very little sense to me.

I have 2 latops with Vista 32bit connect to the internet via a NETGEAR wireless router. I have them both on the same workgroup and want to share files between these machine so I do the following

  • I enable files sharing in the Control Panel
  • I give EVERYONE FULL CONTROL (Read, Write, Delete)
  • I connect from another machine via my wireless router
  • ACCESS DENIED WTF
  • I goto security and on original Laptop
  • I enable EVERYONE for full access
  • YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION to change security settings WTF

Answers to the obvious question.

YES I am the admin on BOTH machines

Why can I not share my C DRIVE with another machine on the same workgroup?
Why can I not change the security permissions on the machine?

I swear these things use to be so d@mn easy on Windows XP.

p.s. VISTA sucks

I suspect you need to create a guest account - on both machines, then enable sharing. I had a similar problem a while back trying to share files between an XP machine and a Vista machine, creating a guest account resolved it.

I think there is a setting in the "network sharing center" where you should enable if the folder is viewable by public or not... not sure though... haven't used it in a while...

yes in network center or something, on the main page theres options to enable password protecting your pc and or enabling sharing and stuff. But ive read a few threads that recommend you to create a guest account on both machines.

No, enanble file sharing and network discovery, disable the rest. Also check the security permissions on the folder, as you will need to add everyone in there as well.

Just a word of thanks to everyone that offered advice I eventually resolved the issue. It seems sharing the C drive (entire root) is not a viable option with Vista (is SUCKS:eek: ). I eventually shared specific folders and changed the other the sharing options to include the other laptop as the co owner of the shared directory. I just hope sharing a root in Windows 7 will not such a pain the rear as it is in Vista.

Cheers :D

if you really want to share the whole c drive, which i wouldn't recomend, create a drive map to //ip adadress/c$ and set the user login to machine id/user id of the sharing machine.
