Vista network problem Please Help

Hi all

I finally got my HP pavilion back from the shop (the wireless failed and they had to replace the motherboard.) I was hoping that with the change I wouldn't have nay problems, but the same issues are here. When I try to connect wirelessly to my router I get local only. I can't even access files on my main PC, which is what I used to be able to do.

I've pasted in the results of the ipconfig, and this is a factory rebooted laptop, so I haven't fiddled yet. Also, when I go to the "Show Full Map" option in Network and Sharing it shows the laptop with 2 broken lines (dashes) to the router, then the router has the 2 broken lines to "switch" whatever that is, and switch has 2 solid lines to my main pc. So although in the network center it says it can't "See" my main pc to swap files with, it obviously can see it somehow, because it has the name of my main pc in the network map section. It's driving me mad, because my wife's xp pc can connect to the wireless network no problem.

Is there something i need to do in my routers config? It all started when I bought a new mecer router.

quite frankly, your router isnt talking to your laptop.
the laptop is asking all and sundry for an ip address, and nobody is answering it, so it is then defaulting to giving itself an ip address that it has made up (the 169.254...part).
now, if all the machines on the local network are set up like this, then they might be able to chat to each other, but none of them would know how to go online, so i take it your wifes pc etc is getting an address assigned to it.

so you gotta get your router to assign an address to this machine.
 
Are you using Vista? I seem to remember vista and certain motherboards have problems with a type of wireless encryption (hence why the xp machine can connect fine). Maybe try change your encryption type on the router and see if that makes a difference.

Failing having vista, have you tried manually assigning an IP to the laptop to see if you can get a connection to atleast another pc?

I am using vista, but have disabled encryption for the moment while I am trying to troubleshoot. (The two vista computers used to be able to talk fine, but it has only been since i got the new modem I have had issues.)
 
According to that log it does seem like you've got DHCP enabled.

Open the network connections control panel on the Vista pc by typing in: ncpa.cpl in the start menu, then you open the properties (right click, properties) of your default network connection, check the TCP/IP V4 and V6 settings and make sure it's set to "obtain IP automatically" as wel as "obtain dns server automatically".

If it's set that way, download and use this little program I made, it's just basically an easy way to execute two batch files ;)

"Obtain IP" and Obtain DNS" are both set to auto. And in the advanced section of that tab under IP address is says DHCP enabled
 
Next would to see if the router has been setup for DHCP.

Can you log onto your router from any pc?

Check your DHCP is giving out IP addresses and there are enough in the pool (ie there are enough ips for all your pcs)

Other than that set a static ip.
 
Post an ipconfig log from your wifes computer ;)
 
dhcp is enabled in router, but it says starting ip address is 192.168.1.33

but above that in a setting that says router local ip the ip address is given as 192.168.1.1 (this is the address I use to log into the router.)
 
go into you network settings where you checked to see if it was set to obtain an ip automatically and set an ip such as

192.168.1.99 (or something sub 99 for any number between 2 and 254)
set the subnet mask to
255.255.255.0
and the gateway as
192.168.1.1

Reason for setting this is without actually seeing the router page its kinda hard to help :)
What i think maybe wrong is that there are not enough ip address in the dhcp pool. That would be my best guess.

If the static doesn't help let us know.

Ok, now check your router, make sure at the DHCP settings the ip range allows for more than 2 pc's to connect, you'll see for instance it's 192.168.1.1 - 35 or something.

Did you check the Network and Sharing Center to see whether your sharing and discovery options are set (check post #8 ) ;)
 
Hmm. Seems a post got lost. After putting in the ip address 192.168.1.22 on my laptop (because I figured it had to be below the number 192.168.1.33 that is in the modem config page?) and setting the gateway and subent as per above, I can not connect to my other comp uter, and my laptop can indentify the network, whereas before it couldn't. But I still can't access the internet.
 
Sorry, I meant to say I can connect to my other computer and share files now, but cannot connect to the internet. It still says local only, but at least it can identify my wireless network.
 
Hmm. I stole my wife's IP address (192.168.1.35) and I can now connect to the internet. Yay! Thanks for your help everyone. I've spent hours searching through sites trying to find a solution. I should have just asked her first. (Of course, if this is the only ip address that works then we can't connect to the internet at the same time. Is that right?
