OK, seems like my problems are never gonna end since installing Vista (hopefully this is just new OS issues)

Anyways guys, I've got a HP LaserJet 1018 printer (connected to my pc via USB), and my pc picks it up in Device Manager (under "other devices"), but doesn't add it as a printer..???

When I go Control Panel=>Printers=>Add Printer Vista tells me I should only follow this path for network printers or printers NOT connected via USB...

Have any of you had the same problem, or does any of you have a solution?

Thanks guys, appreciated

Try this perhaps:-

Copy just the driver folder off the cd to a folder or c:\
In device manager right click other devices and choose "Update Driver Software"
Then just point it to the folder/file on your machine where you copied the drivers for your printer.

or disconnect the printer from the pc. Restart. Install the drivers, plug it back in, in a different usb port

DID you run the setup / installation CD first?

Always found that users put the cd in after connecting to the PC.... so many nightmares hunting .inf,.cat,.vxd,.dll,.pnf files down and deleting them

Download the drivers from the hp website. Had this same problem for 2 months till hp released vista drivers for my deskjet 5150.

Currently, there is no Windows Vista driver available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista at this time.
HP is currently working to make the HP driver solution for your product available as soon as possible.

If the FREAKIN Hardware manufacturers could just add support for their products in Vista it would be awesome...

I have the same problem with my Logitech MX510 Gaming mouse, and therefore I've decided not to EVER buy another Logitech product, and will rather go with Razer (they have Vista drivers even for products that was discontinued 2.5 years ago...)

Seems like this is the way to go with HP aswell.
I AM MAD!!!! - Vista has been released for over a year...

HP Teaches Driver Education

At what point does a manufacturer's responsibility for updating its device drivers end? While that's not a question we can have any hope of answering definitively, a recent gripe from a reader about Vista driver support for his HP scanner might provide a good test case to ponder.

"This is about my HP Scanjet 6300C, which I purchased in December 2001 for $613.06 Canadian, taxes included," the reader wrote. "I consider this piece of gear a significantly expensive item, and would very much like to continue using it. The crux of the problem is that HP has chosen not to provide Windows Vista drivers for this product."

When the reader went looking for a driver on HP's website, he found this page instead:

"We are sorry to inform you that there will be no Windows Vista support available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista. The majority of HP products not supported in Windows Vista are beyond seven years old. If you are using the Windows Vista operating system on your computer, please consider upgrading to a newer HP product that is supported on Windows Vista."

Sure, the reader understands that manufacturers can't support older models of their equipment forever, but he does wonder why his particular device wound up on the wrong side of the line. "Much seven-year-old hardware is old enough to retire," he says. "Newer gear is easier to support, and probably works better to boot. The problem is, my Scanjet 6300C is considerably less than six years old, and yet HP is expecting me to buy a new HP product to replace it. I can tell you for certain, that will not happen as long as other companies make scanners."

Just browsing through HP's Scanjet drivers myself, it's hard to tell just what criteria HP may have employed in deciding which devices get Vista support and which don't. Some scanners of a similar vintage or even older than the 6300 have a "minimum driver" for Vista functionality available from HP. At the same time, some other models that are even newer than 6300 have no Vista support.

There's another reason why the reader is riled up about this. "I also own an even older HP inkjet printer, a Deskjet 710C," the reader wrote.
"This device, which I bought on 08/01/1999, for far less than I paid for the scanner, has FULL Vista support. The driver that's included with Vista even has the utility -- which disappeared in the Windows 2000 driver -- that you need to re-align the print heads after changing ink cartridges. So somebody is paying attention to that device, even though it's more than seven years old."

The reader has his own theory as to why his old inexpensive Deskjet is more worthy of consideration than his newer, more expensive scanner. "I smell a rat. Scanners, once they are out the door, have no future revenue for HP attached to them. Printers, however, do, especially seeing as this particular printer refuses to recognize anything besides $genuine $HP $replacement $ink $cartridges. Please imagine my extreme disappointment that my scanner would not go forward into the new world of Vista along with every other piece of hardware that I own. Imagine also that HP has turned a deaf ear to three attempts to complain to them about this. An old friend of mine always says at times like this 'Are we having fun with your computer yet?' My answer today: 'NOT -- and no thanks, HP, I won't be buying another of your products again in my lifetime.'"

To be fair, HP is hardly the only manufacturer that's not providing Vista support for all the products some customers believe should have it. And I suspect we'll be hearing about some situations where the product's age is a matter of month, not years.

My printer is still on Rectron's pricelist, and less than one year old, yet HP chose not to develop a vista driver...

That's the last HP has seen of me....

AGAIN : I AM MAD!!!!

Yip, same problem here. We use a HP Designjet 500+ A1 wide format printer, and according to the HP website, drivers SHOULD have been released mid-May. I am rather disappointed with HP.

Well I cant print invoices at the moment because we upgraded our computer systems and are now running Vista.

Is this not great!

Well, I happen to own a 6300C scanner also. While researching drivers for Vista64, I ran across a post about using the Hamrick vuescan drivers. I also happen to own a copy of the Hamrick Vuescan software and was able to download the latest version with the Vista64 drivers for free ($39.00 US for a new purchase). In short, the driver works! I am able to scan documents or photos properly in Vista64 using the Hamrick Vuescan software. This will do for me...

I've got Vista and the 1020 (same printer drivers). Worked pretty much plug 'n play with me.
