Hi all

How do you reset folder icons to default in Vista? On my sisters laptop most of the folder icons show up with a picture of our dog.

I've tried resetting to default on the customise tab when you right-click a folder and go to options - no effect. I've Googled this problem, and seem to be coming up with blanks. I've also tried renaming the folder in which that picture is, but that also doesn't work.

Anyone else have this problem, and how did you solve it?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly, you can delete the desktop.ini file inside the folder to reset it to the default. Remember that this is a hidden file, so you'll have to set your Folder Options to view all hidden and system files.

You could also try to right click the folder, go to Properties and then select the Customize tab and click Restore Default button.

Hope that helps.

did you use any third party program to beef up the looks of vista.

No.

The restore default seems to work in some folders, but not others:confused:. Also you have to them one at a time:(.

Are you sure its not showing thumbnails view of the folder's content?

That dog pic will be a hidden .jpg thumbnail somewhere, probably in your 'username' folder. Enable view hidden folders, find the thumbnail and delete it. I had the same problem. It's something to do with vista's virtualisation (or broken virtualisation rather).

What about just selecting all your folders under the root of your drive > right-click and select "properties" > select the "customize" tab > and then click the "restore default" button...

Also tick the box "apply template to all subfolders" and then click OK

I checked. There is no hidden .jpg.

Selecting multiple folders and restoring to default has no effect whether you select subfolders or not.

The few folders that I have managed to restore were selected individually.

did you try disk cleanup? Last item on the list - thumbnails.

Hmmm, came across two possible solutions then. On a note: I don't accept any responsibility for that which I mentioned below, and if you break something, its not my problem :) :

1. open registry editor and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer. In the right hand window delete the "Shell Icons" key.

2. Open a folder which is correct. Then Tools > Folder Options > "View" tab and then select "Reset Folder" button. Applies settings of that folder to all folders of that type.

Only folder icon that is wrong is the program files folder - it is showing a folder with nothing inside, and there is no customise tab if you right click it and go to properties. But it is better than before.
