Hi, I'm seeking advice on whether it is advisable to download Vista SP1 to my HP Pavilion Laptop. It's a very hefty download.
Anyone know if there is a retail disk available.
Any responses appreciated.:)

SP1 weeded out some errors and disagreeableness.
I would recommend it.

Sounds like his problem might be more with the bandwidth costs of downloading the service pack. He's probably using mobile HSDPA which is very expensive per MB. (Yes, not even GB)

pedruid: SP1 is recomended though, if you do have an ADSL line you can buy a GB of local bandwidth for R12 from axxess.co.za (or buy their pick'npay vouchers) and get the local download. Search the forums here there is a thread about the local download.

Yes it sp1 makes a massive difference!I got sp1 for vista ultimate x64 and copying speed increased a huge amount! Lots of little things are improved as well as general performance.

I got x64 version from microsoft site, 700meg download though...It fixed copying speed but first time I installed it, it completely screwed up my vista cause it failed to install, I tried to reinstall vista and that was fail, ended up having to move everything off the drive, format it,install vista and then install SP1 straight away and then it worked

:D Thanks to all of you for your contributions.
I'll wait until the last day of the month and then try a free download.

If you are going to download yourself, especially on a laptop, I'd suggest using Windows Update to do it, the file (if you download most updates) will be just over 60mb and that's how I did it.

You don't need to download the whole service pack, Windows Update chooses what to get if it's missing.

On my laptop SP1 isn't even showing yet on Windows update even after trying a registry hack. That's why I'm getting the dvd. I can then update my sister's laptop as well.
