Windows 7 RC & Vista SP2
1 May 2009

"Microsoft has released both Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC), and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) final (RTM) to MSDN and Technet subscribers. Windows 7 RC will be available to the public on 5 May, and Vista SP2 should be publicly available in the next few days. For now you can read this Microsoft Article detailing notable changes in Vista SP2."

Vista SP2 "notable changes": http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd335036.aspx

Probably Vista prices cause it looks like Vista with a facelift...probably still eats pc resources?

yaa, I wonder if Vista will survive once Win7 is out... if 7 is sooo much better?
Why would anyone buy Vista then?
Unless Microsoft goes all ape***** with the price.... I'm guessing MS is gonna make quite some losses on all the Vista stocks?
Perhaps they should offer a cheap(er) upgrade option from Vista to Win7, so they can at least make sum munny off Vista stocks? :p

something about a 15 second boot on notebooks, but desktop pc's wont benefit from this, don't know why or how not

Looks like Vista is history :-)

Windows 7 only came about due to Vistas epic fail.

Win 7 is just Vista with all the bugs ironed out. Pity they marketing it as a "new" OS and now you got to shell out another couple of Rands to them. And they wonder why people pirate their stuff.

Fixed that for you ... :D

I don't it's as clear cut as that..

The explosion of the Netbook market meant MS had to release an OS that could survive for the next 10 years. We all know how Vista treats netbooks.

They releasing SP2 as the 'bug fix' for Vista.
Win 7 is the spiritual successor to Vista. Not the 'reworked' Vista.

It has some vastly different code underneath.

:)

AFAIK Windows 7 was undertaken with the netbook market in mind, as Vista is too resource intensive for a netbook. Microsoft saw the loss in marketing (not that it's suffering at all) and bad brand perception because of it, and so started with the development of Windows 7, which was also decided to be the next general Windows version. Or at least something along those lines... but hat's already been mentioned.

I did hear a rumour which circulated on a number of sites a while back (will go look for links) that Microsoft was going to be offering Windows 7 as a free upgrade if you had bought Vista. There were 3 distinct "clauses" on this, such as it had to have been bought within a specific timeframe, applied to only Vista Business and Home Ultimate editions, and had to have been bought preinstalled on the system (with proof of purchase).

Don't know what ever happened to those rumours... seems to have been forgotten about.
