I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit, connected via a Netgear wireless PCI card to a Netgear DG834GT. For the last few days, the connection keeps saying local only, no internet, then you wait a bit, it rediscovers that the internet connection is there. Keeps dropping the internet connection every 5 minutes or so, but in the router the connection never dies, nor does it do this with the other devices connected to the network, only the Vista machine.

What gives? I do alternate between IS and SAIX connections, does it on both. IP address and all that is on auto, and have tried public or private network type, same thing. Started a few days, been fine before that, same set up never did this on XP.

Funny enough, I've been noticing the same thing on my Vista system, which is using a built in wireless card on the motherboard. It's connected to a Telkom Mega 105, and the connection will vary between local and internet, but I have no problems surfing no matter what it says.

I've set up static IP addresses on the network, but it did this even when the router was using DHCP.

Wonder what causes it?

Thing is, when it says local only, my Nokia Software Update dies, newsserver dies, torrents die, msn disconnects, webpages dont load. Switching to static IP helps? And why is it only doing it all of a sudden?

AFAIK Vista drops the physical connection to the internet after minutes of inactivity. The moment u try and surf it re-establishes the connection. This should not occur while dwnlding etc.

Same OS, same router, same funny on my PC. Havent had any problems because of it yet.

Mine drops while browsing sometimes. Biggest problem though, Nokia Software Update crashes when the connection dies, and restarts from beginning, no resume!

I changed the DNS server in the router to be 196.43.1.11 for both servers, permanently, haven't had a problem since.

Got the tip on the prophecy forum, seems to work, may help others.
