Vista won't need anti-virus software

Listen werner - when you are running a system such as windows there is always the possibility that a virus will be forwarded to you by email and open and installed without you knowing - what an anti-virus does is ensure that should this happen you are notified and it removes the threat.

Ah ha, I should have also mentioned that I don't use Outlook and I always keep software updated.

Most of the updates available from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, are security related bug fixes, that if left unpatched [hotfixes not yet installed] will result in something nasty happening when one least expects it, plus it makes other software [like firewalls & anti-malware scanner s/w vulnerable as well].

If Micro$oft is so confident that Vista is and will be soo incredibly secure when it has an amazing track-record of churning out incredibly dangerous s/w, then gullable Vista customers in SA should submit bandwidth consumption bills to Micro$oft SA for every security related update that they have had to download [for Vista when it becomes available].

I'm with Werner on this and I fully agree.

The threat of a virus is far more damaging than the actual virus itself. The entire Symantec and Mcafee teams exist solely because of this threat and nothing else. IN this day where people only do things for money, one wonders who would sit there and write a virus for free and with what resources. :/

Symantec and McAfee both believe in Vista's security so much that they went to the EU to complain. If you as th eusers have so much confidence in their anti-virus programs, you should ask yourself why is it they are concerned about their futures.

Do you not think they have tried to infect Vista systems (their own) for testing etc..? Of course they have and they came short that's why they were up in arms about it.

For every software engineer Symantec has, MS has twice the number of people looking at Vista Security. After years fending off attacks and the like, how efficient do you think those software engineers on the Vista security team have become ;)

Are you kidding me? A threat is harmless compared to the payload of a destructive virus or trojan.

As for why do it - there is big money to be made in botnets - imagine who much spam can be pumped out by a 1million plus computers in a single botnet or the strength of a ddos attack coming from one of these.

Time will tell but have you ever known microsoft not to boast about the security of an upcoming os?

Knowing there are people actually denying the plausibility of viruses and other malicious content is reason enough for me to want to protect myself.

common sense is all it takes to keep you safe and happy.
......
nah, see, i WOULD know.

call it confidence, call it experience of whatever you want, but i dont have a virus. 100% fact.
Lets see:
Zero-day exploits, HTML email, UP&P, windows networking.....

Experience, maybe.
*Common* sense, no.

The screenshot is a bit unclear. Did AVG find a virus then?

screenshot is fine, click on it to get the full version...only unclear when they resize it so small.

no , no virus'

bwana, 12k files on this box, which is my primary browsing and email and messing around machine. personally, i'm not gonna run avg on everything i have and post a screenshot to clarify, this is good enough:-)

hvrooyen, I hear you. But, I have just proved it is possible to run a clean house.

Werner - were you in nappies when the blaster worm was doing the rounds? What did you do for the week or so while M$ pottered around to sort out their code? BTW - many AV firms have updated code out prior to M$ and their patches. Anyone yet heard if M$ have patched the exploit in Visual Studio 2005?

Oh... btw Werner - nice to see you using AVG ;)

MS bull............%^&*, no antivirus, I'd like to live on that virtual planet

From what I've heard the problem is M$oft haven't yet given the Security people the sort of access they require to the guts of vista. They might not get the sort of access they require until SP1.

Could this be the real reason why they're pretending to be immune to infection?

If Microsoft can fix their broken OS so that it's resistant to viruses
and malware, there will be no need for these 'security' people.
Don't you see it that Symantec, and the others are just parasites
spreading FUD about viruses and other threats? MS - fix your
OS once and for all, altho I don't think it will happen.

actually, it was quite funny.
i came into work and the phones were going like mad..everyone had blaster..but in our time zone it struck after midnight, i was asleep and the pc was off.
so i knew when u got home to disable that shutdown dialog and already had a patch from ms to sort it out.

*sigh* why am i telling you this...

*double sigh* yes, avg is on the FSCKING machine because i was asked earlier to run it to prove the machine is clean. it is now removed, would you like a screenshot of that too?
personally, you guys go stick with your av and i'll stick with my way. it works for me just fine thanks

and because we are all b1tching about technicalities, blaster was a worm, and this thread is about viruses. :-)

i know it doesnt seem normal to you guys and you all think i am bullsh1tting because YOU cant imagine it, but that doesnt mean it is not true. just bear in mind you probably worship a deity that apparently floats in the sky and shoots lightning bolts on demand and can walk on water, yet nobody has seen him either and we dont say you are weird.

<edit> a little thought has sprung to my mind also...pray tell, where were you and your av when blaster struck? busy rebooting like mad probably. that thing was nasty and windows users were united in a reboot, antivirus or not. of course, some of us knew how to open a command prompt and type shutdown -a to abort it and carry on working, but we can leave that story for another day hey...

That's a big 'If'. Each time a version of windows comes out it's the safest version ever.

Found a virus!

Okay, I did the same as Werner - installed AVG and started a scan. Actually found a virus ....

..... BUT, it is a Java/OpenStream virus, which Sun's website says the following about: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/cache_virus.xml

If you are using the Sun JVM as your default virtual machine, these malicious applets cannot cause any harm to your computer.

So yeah, even though I managed to get a virus without anti-virus software, it can't do anything to me. :)

Doing away with Anti-virus software would be such a big bonus of Vista.
It would be THE only reason to upgrade. The only reason that these
AV companies exist is because Windows is so broken.

Speaking of Vista, all that it is is Windows XP SP3. It's just
a prettier much more resource intensive interface with
just eye-candy plus obtrusive DRM/trusted computing.
Apparently it even relocks your DVD playback capabilities back
to the single Region you're in.

I won't be upgrading to Vista, unless its on a cheap OEM machine
I buy when my current laptop (2 GHz Centrino, 1GB RAM ATIX700M
128MB) becomes obsolete for video watching/music/web/email
and word processing. For games I can always buy a PS3 (no
Xbox360 crud) when that comes around and becomes cheap.
Vista is just shine without substance, reminds me of Windows Millenium Edition.

That is a retarded comment. Vista is a COMPLETE redesign. It CANNOT be compared with XP. They did not simply slap on a slick user interface and add DRM. That is complete nonsense. Every review ive read says the memory usage, networking protocols...etc.. everything is brand new....

It is the same leap in software we had going from Windows 98 to Windows XP

What file system does Vista use? I haven't used any beta or pre-release test version, so I'm not sure ;)

Is it NTFS?
