Vista

Vista RC1 worked fine with a UTD over Ethernet for me, I can't remember whether I tried the USB cable or not. I've since deleted my Vista partition, but it was definitely working.

Vista works fine :) games dont run fine :( a 100% decrease in fps in CS source is not so nice from 120fps on 1280x1024 with 4x AA and 16x AF to 55fps on 1024x768 with 4xAF and no AA ...I'm assuming this will be fixed though when nvidia release proper drivers for their cards

Give it two years and we'll all have Windows Vista.. :)

I think we're all bored with the Windows95 look. :(

Ive since installed Vista on vmware. Not a bad OS, but very resource intensive!

It rated my pc 4.1 out of 10 :(
AMD 3500+
1gb Ram
XFX 7800gtx 256mb
WD 250gig 7200 SATA2

Get the Vista Transformation Pack for XP. Stability (and speed) of XP, with the Vista look. No more boring! :)

that rating is out of 5.9 by the way ;) i got 4.8

I for one am not bored. I don't think I will be going Vista. I am going to use XP for as long as I can and when I have found a suitable Linux distribution.

Vista does not allow loading of "unsigned" device drivers. So Microsoft can go get stuffed. A lot of my work and research depends on being able to load a home-made device driver (and that's not to say I am not coding them according to their WDM standards). I am a one-man show and I do not support making Bill Gates richer for the sake of being able to allow my code to run on their OS- that's extortion!

Bingo. IMO Vista is going to push a lot of MS users toward the simpler Linux distros - although it'll take time. Of course, most new PCs will still come with Vista pre-installed...

I use Linux extensively, the only current barrier is Linux programming and I am strongly considering taking the plunge seeing that I found it not so hard to correct a serious problem I had when my LAN card drivers died when I recompiled the kernel.

I am hoping a hack of some sorts i.e. a "driver signing utility" will become available to work around that problem... but I doubt it as more and more technical people are moving to Linux, it's getting harder to find those wonderful toys we play with, for Windows nowadays...

But for the issue regarding Vista pre-installations, that's easy. If you buy computer in component form from suppliers then it's simple. I often sell blank PC's to customers, they insist on it and I just know they're going to load their favorite *NIX distro on the machine :D

I buy all my PCs in component form. I was talking about Joe Public. The poor buggers are gonna go out and buy a new "faster" PC, only to find their new "better" OS is so resource intensive that there will be no big gain.

That's how I see it, anyway. I'll stick with XP until I figure out Linux, thx.

And this is how I make a portion of my income, providing tech support and sales to these poor chaps. A lot of people are wisening up to Linux tho, it's encouraging. I think M$ are digging a very deep grave for themselves slowly but surely

Gaming is one of the things that holds Linux back. I have to say where it not for that I would not load up XP at all. Now that FM2007 runs in Wine, I do find I boot XP up even less.
